With all of the EA madness happening right now, I'm sure commanders rankings are on the minds of lots of cadets. That being said, how are commanders rankings turned into a score? When someone says they are ranked "top third" in their det, how does that translate into something that can be placed into a packet? For example, if your detachment has 20 200s going up for SFT, does the commander literally list all twenty in order from best to worst and assign point values? Or is it something more intricate than that? Thanks!

Hopefully it's not as simple as that. What if all 20 cadets are top notch and the difference between number one and number twenty is small. A friend went through UPT and the difference between the top and the bottom guy is less than one percent. I'd imagine the ranking system is more detailed ie the detco is giving point values based on each individual cadet. Jmpo

Thats what I was thinking. They have to have a pretty intricate system set up, I was just hoping to see if anyone could provide any insight into it.

I assume, and we all know what the word assume means is it is like SFT ranking. A certain of amount of points will be awarded by groups. Cadets are not ranked out number 1 -20 as in number 15 gets X points, number 16 gets a different X point amount and 17 gets another.

Instead it is
Number 1 cadet gets X amt
Top 1% gets a different amount
Top 10% gets another.

They continue this process with top 1/3, next 1/3rd, bottom 1/3.

Yrs past for SFT it was different. The ranking went after the top 10% to 20, 30, 50 and bottom 50. I believe last yr it went 1/3rd, 2/3rd and bottom 1/3rd.

Thus, the CoC's ranking matters from where you stand in a group setting compared to the actual number. #15 could get more points than #16, because they could be top 1/3rd, and 16 is next 1/3rd.

Additionally, when you start adding cadet A is top 1/3rd, but has a 96 PFT, and a 3.42 cgpa non-tech, plus a 30 ACT. Their score is going to be different than cadet B that is top 2./3rd, 3.3 tech major with a 98 PFT and a 34 ACT. It is now where the points land for PFT, cgpa, and SAT too, since cadet B is higher scoring for 50% of the OML. Yet nobody knows what points will be awarded for the higher cgpa, higher SAT, and higher PFT regarding point break down. A 96 PFT may be the same as a 98, or it could be much lower. Typically we know from past yrs you need a 3.3./3.4 as a non-tech and a 3.0/3.1 as a tech. Cadet B in my example has a high cgpa for tech compared to the non-tech when they weight the majors.

As stated it can become a very small differentiation from getting a slot and not getting one. This would explain also why when they had to cut 600, but have basically guaranteed certain career fields on scholarship they will go, how to re-jig all of the cadets.

It is the WHOLE package, and even though the CoC's rec matters it is only 50%. One slip like a 92 PFT or a 2.9 cgpa could mean the difference from being number 1499 and number 1501.

Well, hopefully tomorrow is the day! Good luck to everyone!

If I hear anything I'll make sure i update after PT in the morning :)

Please do!! The suspense is killing us!!

I have heard that tomorrow maybe the day.. Who knows?

of all days, April the 1st... please dont tease me cadre xD but I really do hope we find out tomorrow.

I really hope it's tomorrow. The worst part of this whole thing though is that our det's entire 200 class is taking the afoqt tomorrow on base haha, so for those of us that don't make it... just know it won't be pretty.

Dang.. Really? How many 200s are in your det?

If you're taking the AFOQT, good luck!!!

ya, we kind of expected the results to be out a couple of weeks ago so that we wouldn't have this issue... oh well.

We have 22.

and thanks! I've been studying my butt off the last few days.

Shocked that they are doing the AFOQT on a weekday from an academic perspective. 22 cadets all needing to get time off from class on one day. What if you had an exam?

Detachments with nearby military installations seem to utilize the base education offices (BEOs) rather than go through the hassle of administering the AFOQT themselves. The test is offered on the first duty day of the month, and since the BEOs are only open M-F during normal business hours, the cadets are left with 12 dates to choose from per year. I believe the April cycle is the last one for 200's to utilize if they haven't taken it yet, hence the mad rush today.

Learn something new everyday.

I assumed that the AFOQT could be taken as a 300. It appears it has to be done by the end of 200 yr.

I just wonder if this is the 1st time ohconnor's det is doing this if that is the case. I always was under the assumption you can take it 2x, 180 days apart. The question is if the det did it back in the fall why didn't you do it?

SFT is like HSSP and ACT/SAT....whichever is higher. If your AFOQT score is higher than your SAT/ACT score they would take the AFOQT, if it is lower they would take SAT/ACT. Thus, why would anyone not take it twice if it had to be done by the end of their 200 yr? Isn't it no harm, no foul?

Not trying to be antagonistic, trying to get it.

I will be honest DS took it once, and did very well, but this is a kid that had 1390 SAT and a 33 or 34 ACT (can't remember). For him he felt comfortable, and knew TBAS was going to replace AFOQT.

I am just trying to learn, so no flaming.

OBTW, our DS went to det 330. They did AFOQT on campus on a Saturday. TBAS was done at Andrews, every cadet was sent on a different day and time slot so they were not there together as a group. I get your position of costs UA.

Pima - At our det you can take it as late as your AS300 year. Some choose to, others dont.

Pima,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reason the 200s are taking the afoqt is as follows: the latest a cadet can take it is day x -- deadline is in the middle of their 300 year. But if that is the cadets first time, they may possibly fail a portion because they don't know what their strengths/weaknesses are. The cadet must wait 180 days to retake the test which would be too late per the deadline (not sure what the actual deadline is--rated boards?). If you take the deadline and subtract 180 days you end up in about April-June of the 200 year. Cadets are taking it now so if any of them fail and have to wait 180 days to retake, they will still make the deadline in 300 year.

There were several cadets at my det that failed the afoqt after going through field training. Imagine waiting to get selected for an EA, make it through field training and then fail the afoqt and get booted out.

^^This

This is the first time our det is making it mandatory to take the afoqt 200 year. Honestly, it wasn't that bad. I was expecting much, much worse.

Our son is at an SMC and the 200's there do not have to take the test as 200's but can take it as 300's if they choose.

My son is a freshman on scholarship and he was required to take the AFOQT this year. He took it on the 23rd and we had his scores back this past Friday. In the past they would take your AFOQT scores as part of your FT packet, but now it seems as though they will take the higher of your AFOQT, ACT SAT etc.. Which for someone who has a high ACT, etc. that is a good thing in case you don't do as well on the test. He was able to score 90+ is all areas but even so his ACT equivalent beat out those scores. There were three of them that took it and it was administered on a Saturday at his detachment by one of the cadre. They didn't miss school but they were only given one weeks advance notice that they were indeed taking the test. I'm sure my son would have liked to know a little more in advance to study.

I wish I knew that information before they submitted packets. I was informed that ACT scores were not included in the ranking system until it was too late to take the AFOQT and that it was just for if you wanted a scholarship. Now I'm sitting with a lower ACT score where slots are scarce. Yikes
