German Armed Forces Badge

My DS is a MSI and has been chosen to compete for the German Armed Forces Badge this month. Has anyone on this forum ever competed for it, and I'm assuming this not a competition parents can go and watch (not a dork-just new to anything military):smile:.
 
I haven't competed for it, but it's something I would like to if given the opportunity. I know the hardest part is finding someone to actually administer the assessment.

Both my son's did this at their Battalion. Your right, this is not something you would go watch. They will train for what will take place usually over two days. The cadets can earn one of three Badges depending on how they score, Gold, Silver, or Bronze. It's an interesting course but nothing you would want to make a trip to see. If it's like most Battalions they will have a lot of pictures.

This would be something the Battalion would offer to all the cadets if they are able to arrange for it, you don't need to try out, everyone will be able to compete for the badge.

Interestingly, my battalion had a pre-qual for it this year, that is everyone who wished to compete had to do a ruck, swim, ect. to qualify for the competition.

Probably to screen out those who probably wouldn't do well in the conpetition...
 
I did the GAFPB last year and got gold, the standards have changed this year as have some of the events as I helped grade this year's contenders. The main events are for 2013 (I will post the Gold Standards for each event, you will essentially need to get gold in all of the events in order to ruck for the gold, if you get more than 2 silvers, I believe, you will go for silver):
3K run
Male/Female 18-19; 13:20 & 18:00/ Male/Female 20-24; 12:50 & 17:50
Shot put or standing long jump:
SP= Male/Female 18-19; 8,75 & 7,5/ Male/Female 20-24; 9,00 & 7,5 LJ= Male/Female 18-19; 2,5 & 2,05/ Male/Female 20-24; 2,5 & 2,0
100m sprint
Male/Female 18-19; 12:50 & 14:30/ Male/Female 20-24; 12:30 & 14:50
high jump or running long jump
HJ= Male/Female 18-19; 1,5 & 1,3/ Male/Female 20-24; 1,55 & 1,3
RLJ= Don't have the requirements as they were sent in a Frago
First aid test
Pass/Fail
Pistol Qualification
Must hit all 3 targets with at least 1 bullet
5 hits= gold
4 hits= silver
3 hits= bronze
Ruck march
Gold= 7.5 miles under 2 hours
Silver= 5.6 miles under 1.5 hours
Bronze= 3.8 miles under 1 hour
 
Not this year I guess, when I did it, we had to do swim and the males had to run a 5k instead of a 3k. They added in one event which was the standing long jump from previous years.
Also last year, all of the events were go/no-go and the pistol event decided what medal you would ruck for, now they have gold/silver/bronze standings for each event and those "medals" count for points, if you are in a certain range of points, then you get to compete for gold at the end, silver, bronze.

I'm sad to see the requirements have become so easy. When I earned my gold in 2000, the ruck standard was 20 miles in 5 hours. Given the state of the Bundeswehr now, I'm not surprised. There used to be more of a sense of achievement for that badge. I'm sorry to think that with those standards, any of our young officer candidates would need a pre-qual.

No swim?!

The ruck got extremely easy and pretty much anyone with a little training (if any) can get gold. Still, it is one cool looking foreign badge.

Also:

It's easier to participate if your school is located to a fort obviously so if you do have a chance or have the funds to fly a German SGM (or officer) out to your school then go for it. All in all it's a great morale/camaraderie boosting badge to compete for.

The standards of the ruck have dropped considerably in the past few years. The year before I went, it was 13 (or 15?) miles they had to ruck. And now they have begun to water it down even more. Sad to think of how the requirements have changed.
