Need some advice/help please. DS received an email offering him a Civil Prep option. The email explained he would be removed from the NWL. Can anyone shed some light as to what this means and the upside/downside of this? Thanks all and good luck to all those who are still waiting!

Congrats to your DS!

Upside: If he completes the year successfully (>3.0, receives another nomination, no disciplinary problems and with the recommendation of the program he attends) he will be in the class of 2018:thumb:

He will most likely have to pay a portion of the tuition of the prep program he selects. The West Point AOG (alumni organization) will pay a portion and the prep program will most likely comp a portion of their tuition.

Hard to say what the downside is if your son really wants to go to West Point. Others might have something there.

Thanks for the reply! We have been looking up some more info and we are getting more excited about this opportunity. Any other thoughts out there? Thanks again for all the help!

The Civil Prep scholarship from AOG is a very exciting opportunity. Your son will be a year older, a year wiser and a year better prepared for WP. You have to understand; WP wants to insure the success of there cadets. They want students who can handle the academic stresses. This is a very special experience. During the four years they will be taking on18 credits semesters. If a student is academically separated that slot is lost for the duration of the class. You cannot drop a class cause you think the proff is out to get you.

Look at the several Prep schools that you can select from. Some are non-military others are. Some are an upper level of high school; some are an extension of a college. Usually the AOG is $3000, the school offers an additional 3000 and you make up the difference. There are scholarships and grants you can apply for to help with the financial burden.

The prep schools will take care of SOE and grades. You will need to seek another nomination. They also will give reports to WP on his progress and will be taking the ACT/SAT tests several times. How none of the credits are transferable.

He will be better prepared for success. This is a very good thing!

Thanks TugBoat...I was hoping to hear from you! We are doing research on the different academys tonight trying to find the best fit. Thanks also for your continued advice and encouragement on this forum. Best of luck to all!

Here is what the offer to a Civil Prep school means:

Your DS was on the NWL which means he/she had a nomination and was 3Qd - fully qualified for admission.

Your DS was not high enough on the NWL to get an offer this year, but was considered to be a top candidate-probably barely missed getting an offer this year. WP wants to provide a year of Prep School and will offer your DS an appointment next year if your DS makes good grades and stays out of trouble.

Incidently - the difference between getting an offer to the West Point Prep School and a Civil Prep is - people getting offers to the WP Prep WERE NOT 3Qd. Civil Prep offers are normally to people who were 3Qd - so you are starting at a higher level.

Take this great opportunity and be VERY HAPPY.

BIG NICK --Do most of prep school candidates % wise, get into West Point. And if prep school is higher, then do they have a better chance to get in then a MAPS candidate ?

DS also received his letter last week offering the AoG civil prep. He did accept the offer and chose Marion. His letter said it would in no way remove him from the NWL. In fact, it said it would not interfere with his future chances of being acepted this year. Marion was his choice for several reasons. One being location to home and second being finances. The school also has a 100% advancement rate to West point. Of the 50 civil prep students this past year 22 of them were at MMI. Ds is very excited and has already spoken to the LTC and a current student at MMI who just recently received his appointmnet to USMA. It certainly seems as if an appopintment is almost yours to lose, literally. Good luck and keep in touch if MMI is your choice.

Thanks WienerDog! We are looking at NMMI and Marion but leaning towards Marion. We will be talking to our RC tomorrow to better understand this option. Interesting though...in the email my DS received he was told he would be removed from the NWL. Will get that clarified tomorrow. If we do opt for Marion...you bet we will be in touch.

Thanks Big Nick. We are very happy with the news and we do appreciate the additional info!

WD and JWP

Congrats to both of you. Somebody (RC) thought highly of your sons to push the AOG scholarship your way. If I were King, every student would attend a prep before going into an SA. I feel the high schools today don't fully prepare students for the college level academics. It can be a cold slap of real world in the face, and helicopter parents aren't there to deflect the negitive attention. The military spends alot of money in hopes these leadership students succeed. And if that student is later separated, that capital investment is lost. Attending a prep certainly assists with finding success.

Congratulations to your DS! :thumb:
That is great news!
Basically, candidates who are offered this are QNS with a nom, usually with strong leadership.
The AOG will pay for 1/3 of the costs to go to one of 5 Civil Prep schools ( MMI, Valley Forge, NMMI, Hargrave and Greystone) for one year and then reapply. The school pays 1/3 and the candidate pays for 1/3.
Only about 50 are offered/yr (think of it as 1 per state) and are offered to either scholar/leaders or recruited athletes (recruited athletes go to a sports specific school)

Here is a link that describes the program: http://www.westpointaog.org/page.aspx?pid=4578

Your DS must be viewed as highly desirable candidate but for whatever reason (very competitive district?) , WP was not be able to offer him a spot in this year's class.
This is pretty much the next best thing. :thumb:

Read GoArmyBeatNavy's post above. (#2)
I wouldn't consider AOG CP higher than USMAPS. Both programs serve different purposes. They aren't interchangeable.
Those offered the AOG CP route are not qualified to go to USMAPS because they are academically qualified.
Those offered USMAPS are not qualified for the AOG CP scholarship because they are not academically qualified.
USMAPS = not academically qualified
AOG CP = 3Q'd + nom, but QNS

Congrats to your DS too, WienerDog! :thumb:
Just to be clear - the statement bolded is a stat for those who are there on the AOG scholarship (sponsored).
This stat is not true for those who go non-sponosred.

My son attended MMI in 2007 on an AOG scholarship and graduated from WP in 2012. It was a hard year for him. he had never been away from home before and was very homesick. BUT he will tell you that beast was a breeze for him after his year at MMI, and the extra year helped him succeed during his 4 years at West Point. an AOG offer will lead to a West Point appointment, it is theirs to lose. MMI has an excellent track record for the SA's and will prepare him for what is to come. Look at this as an opportunity for your child to achieve his goal. My son had one nomination his first attempt at West Point, after re applying the next year, he received every nomination available to him, including the VP.

DS just spoke with RC and will be accepting Civil Prep ! So excited. Thanks to all for the great information!

Do you have to ask your RC for a chance at civil prep? How does that work? Or do they choose.

Civil Prep and USMAPS are similar in that the decision is in admissions based on your application to USMA. You don't need to ask your RC for either, but it couldn't hurt to be in good with your FFR to advocate for you. Chances are, they've seen who has gotten in before and if you have a legitimate shot at one of the spots.

DS has chosen MMI and has spoken to the AoG rep at MMI, a current sponsored student, and financial aide office. Any questions that I can answer simply PM me. So far, DS is squared away to head to MMI. Application done as well as FAFSA and all req's. Now waiting to go. Aug. 13th is the date for this summer for MMI.

I will tell you that it is not an easy row to hoe, out of the dozen or so AOG sponsored cadets that received appointments to WP with my son, only around 4 or 5 actually graduated, once they get to WP they have keep there nose to the grindstone and keep the prize in sight.

I am not sure a sponsored cadets chances would be anymore difficult or different than anyone elses.
