i read in an old thread that the club while it doesn't count as credit, they get to go on trips and don't count against your passes to leave. i'll have to do an intramural still, but i wanted to know if at all how much do C4Cs get to snowboard and if it is worth getting all the gear necessary my first year or wait a year. I want to try something new and i thought snowboarding would be great. i was also wondering if it is as simple as signing up for the club or do you have to try out? anyone else looking at joining the club?

I'm going to try to do either the ski club (I'm thinking it's the same thing as snowboarding club) or trying out for the club alpine ski team. For the ski club, you do not need to try out. As I understand it, you just pay a relatively small amount of money to get bused out to nearby ski resorts.
I am also wondering how much C4Cs would actually get to go skiing/snowboarding. Could someone who's done the club elaborate on how the leave passes/ski club thing works?

I'm not a cadet, but I do have access to the cadet calendar and it looks like they had a trip planned just about every weekend during the ski season.
I'm not sure if you're required to use a pass or not to go on a trip since it's a club. Maybe a cadet will chime in for us.

DS (a C4C) has been to the slopes on multiple occasions. More in the fall than in the dark days (40 days before Recognition). They can go either with the ski club or with friends (borrow car, etc). You get 5 passes per semester, more for doing good things. Don't use passes on Sundays when you go to the sponsor home and if football team wins, you can get more, etc, etc, etc. Basically, lots of opportunity IF you are doing well in classes and keep up. (My DS has skipped trips when he had lots of homework to do)

No firsthand experience here, but I listened to my daughter's sponsor mom counseling one of her cadets to WAIT to purchase gear and just rent for awhile until a) you know you like it and b) there's enough snow to warrant breaking out new fun gear. Apparently the first few times C4Cs can go snowboarding might be on manmade snow (?) in the fall on conditions that might cause a few more nicks and gouges then a person might like. That being said, the gear has to be stowed with the sponsor family anyway until after Recognition, I believe. So you may not want to come all geared up with nowhere to store..or snowboard.

Snowboards can be stored in a C4C's room before recognition. Son's fit in the double-door cabinet above the closet. As long as its stored out of sight for inspections it was OK. However, no guarantees that it will still be the same in the future.
On Labor Day weekend (Which conveniently is also Parent's Weekend) one of the big sporting goods stores in Denver and Colorado Springs has a sale called Sniagrab (Bargains spelled backwards). They have tons of boots, boards, helmets, and clothing on sale. Most of it is scratch N dent or last years models. But if a new boarder wants to get some inexpensive equipment it is a good deal. Go early for best choices. Both of my sons got $700-$800 boards for less than $200. Oldest son ended up with three boards and over 1 million feet of recorded vertical drop by his Firstie year.

it looks like i will go ahead and plan on getting some gear till then. that is awesome, your son must of had an awesome time getting in all that snowboarding!
