DS just received his letter in the mail today. The offer was a 4 year to an IS school. In the letter and explanation it offers tuition and mandatory educational fees. I always thought it was for tuition or room & board. Being an IS school, tuition is cheaper and he was hoping to use the scholarship for R&B. Did they take it off as a choice? Anyone else receive the same information?

Hope that my previous post doesn't sound ungrateful. DS is over the moon. This was his last choice school, but his greater goal is to be an officer. He is definitely taking the scholarship and looking forward to this fall.

Yes, you can choose to use the scholarship for room and board, just be aware that if you do use the scholarship for room and board it will be taxable.

Your son will just need to check the box for room and board when he signs his contract.

BTW, your post did not sound ungrateful at all, this question is asked a lot and there are a lot of cadets that choose the room and board option.

Congratulations to your son, even though the school was his last choice, after a couple months he won't be able to imagine himself anywhere else.

That slow mailman finally delivered.:jump1:

Congrats.

Jcleppe is correct. Make the most of the scholarship.

Congrats on the scholarship! The other posters as always have given the correct advice/information.

The scholarship can be used for room and board. If used this way it's value is up to $10,000. My son uses his for room and board.

Each year the cadets are given a form to sign where they check a box showing whether they want to use it for tuition or room and board.

And yes, it is taxable.

In State

Be sure to check with the IS school before checking the box. Some universities will pick up the room and board for an in state student if you use your ROTC scholarship for tuition.

Also, I'd like to add one more thing. My DS received an AROTC scholarship to VMI last year. The fees alone are over $4000. Added to the tuition, it was more than the room and board, and the scholarship pays all the fees as well as the tuition. Just one other thing to check out before you possibly pay taxes for nothing.

Out of curiosity, what is included for "fees"? Are book allowances classified under fees, or is that a different category?

Once your scholarship kicks in you will have your tuition paid, get $600.00 per semester for books, receive your stipend and class fees such as Lab fees, Language fees and such.

Be aware, if you take PE classes or swimming classes or other such classes, the Army may not pay those fees.

My son is taking a Swim Boot Camp class right now, the Army did not pay the pool fee or the life guard fee. Your on your own for those.

There is a large document on the net listing what is considered a fee. I was shocked to see what was considered a fee. If I recall correctly if the school requires medical insurance that is considered a fee. If I can find the document I will post the link.

Most schools will only require the School's Medical Insurance if they are not covered by your family insurance. If the student does opt to purchase the school's insurance it is not paid for by the ROTC Scholarship.

My son also took a golf class, the $250.00 class fee to cover green fees was not paid my the Army. I can certainly agree with that one. Son paid that out of the stipend money.

I'm pretty sure golf is included only in the Air Force curriculum. It may even be mandatory.

The document you linked to is at least 5 years out of date CCR 145-1 was just updated on 11/06/2012. Would suggest we not link to an outdated reg if we can help it. Take a look at the CC PAM 145-1 appendix C for the current list. I'm sure it's not too different than what was in the old reg, but I didn't look closely.

My apoligies for posting an out of date link. I understand the importance of up to date, factual information on this site. My bad...
