Just to help with some conections before the line starts...

Name, Height (Company), Major Interest

Isaac, 70", History, Markmenship

My DS, Noah is 6'3", 210-215lbs, depending on how much he's eaten and used the bathroom that day. probably will be in Alfa or Fox company is what he's been told. His interests include weightlifting & football. (He's trying to contact the football coaches at VMI to see if he can walk-on and attend summer football training camp this summer before matriculation). He plans to major in biology and go activr duty Army after. but get his masters in Physical or Occupational therapy or Kinesology down the road. He works as a lifeguard during the daytime in the summers, & a bartender at a lakefront wedding venue/party place on the weekends, mainly in the evenings/nights.

Oh!!! and I almost forgot. His other intetsts include eating (a lot!!!), hanging out with his friends & girlfriend, playing video games with his buddies (Rune Scape, COD, Battlefield, etc...) and sleeping, (but only for a few hours each night so he doesnt miss time to workout, eat or be with friends). All of this of course when he's not at school. As an 18 year old HS senior who's got less than two months before he graduates, he's hardly ever home (except for one of those interests I've mentioned above. Mainly the eating, sleeping, & video gaming. I suppose he's a normal teenage boy. I'm sure all the other teenage boys spend time at home playing board games with their families, help their mothers cook dinners, and love to help clean house and do yard work unlike my DS. I guess I'm just lucky.

All kidding aside, he's a great, hardworking young man and I couldn't be prouder. He's truly the best son a man could ask for. I'm just hoping that after he finishes the ratline his bedroom will be as clean as his barracks room when he's home and his wardrobe will expand beyond basketball shorts, tennis shoes, & workout t-shirts (sleeveless of course, to show off his muscular arms and chest) :-}~

Good luck to you pathnottaken and congrats on attending VMI.

My DS Anthony is 6'2" and anywhere from 200 - 215 depending of his schedule. During cross country season he was around the 200 mark. Now that he is into weight lifting 215 is the average. He is at the gym everyday conditioning for VMI. He plans on majoring in Engineering at the moment. He would like to try marksmanship. He enjoys playing his guitar and drums during his downtime. His plans are to commission into the Navy after graduation from VMI.

We are very proud of the man he is becoming. Good luck to all this fall.

VMI, The Rat Line and Football

Our DS is a first who will be commissioned in USMC next month. He had similar football aspirations when he decided to go to VMI four years ago. However, while at STP he went to the NCAA athletic briefing and quickly came to the conclusion that he could not (1) deal with the Rat requirements; (2) deal with the academic requirements; (3) deal with the NROTC / USMC requirements; and (4) be successful at football. Over the years, there are few football athletes who are also on ROTC scholarship.

DS ultimately went to Plan B and has played rugby the last 4 years. He started on the A side during his Rat year and loves the camaraderie of the game. Also, it doesn't take as much time as football and provides an opportunity to blow off "steam." Despite being in a cadet leadership position, he's just another Rat brother on the rugby field.

VMI beat W&M this past weekend int he first round of the USA Rugby play-offs (think NCAA for rugby). They now move to the Virginia playoffs this weekend; if they can win 2 matches, they then go to the Sweet 16 equivalent of nationals.

You will love VMI. My wife and I are proud to see our son graduate, but we will miss the VMI experience and all that comes with it. As many have said, it is a family.

Congratulations to your boy. You really will miss it. It was pretty surprising to me how bittersweet a feeling it was when I realized that I no longer was going down to Lexington in October for Parents weekend. For me as an alum the connection really is lifelong, (just this afternoon a number of my Brother Rats and I set up a mini reunion weekend on the beach in Old Lyme Connecticut for next September. It's amazing how many of those guys I still talk with and socialize with all the time!) and your son will find the same thing. You can keep that feeling of being in the family alive though by staying in touch on this forum and sharing your experiences even after your son's graduation:wink: Good luck to your boy and all of the "pre-strains" who soon will become the Rat Mass of 2017.

Ummm... Don't count on this. In some ways this gets worse. The overwhelming need to sleep and desire to do NOTHING except stare into the refrigerator in amazement wins out over dusting the bedroom. Good luck to All.. including the parents:thumb:

How true. No amount of indoctrination will turn 20 year old young men into paragons of order in the matter of bedroom maintenance. Sorry to all those Moms & Dads who were hoping for this outcome- VMI does wonderful things, but not miracles:wink: And when they come home- your food bill will skyrocket - as they try to make up for 9 months of pretty bad chow:eek:
Congrats to all of the future Rats of 14+3. Enjoy the last month of High School, stay out of trouble, get in shape, and occasionally tell your mother that you love her to help her get ready for you leaving!

Haha Bruno! I had to laugh at your last line! It's so true! Just as VMI cadets do not have an ordinary college experience, neither do mothers have an ordinary experience of their child being away at college. It's a weird and heart-tugging experience to see your child herded into the barracks, the gate closes, and you leave with your child being yelled at. If that's not out of the ordinary, I don't know what is!

Also, during last summer before my DS' matriculation, he said he WASN'T going to tell me he loved me so that he could break cold turkey of not having much communication with him. WRONG approach! Tell your mother you love her every day! Trust me, it's much better that way.

VMI 14+3 should be title of this thread but I am just a proud dad so what do I know...

Son got his "New Cadet Handbook" and "Leadership Opportunity Inventory" booklets today in the mail. He was reading them when I got home. This evening I could tell he was putting a little more effort into his work out and run than he had been. I guess the booklets must contain some "real" wake-up information.

Hope all you 14+3 are preparing 104 days before matriculation.

Pathnottaken,
My DS got his handbook in the mail yesterday and was reading it last night as well. He actually got up BEFORE school today and went for a run! 103 days to go

Arthur Perea. 69". AROTC Physics. Wrestling and/or powerlifting.
