DS received TWE. He was disappointed, but grateful for USMA appointment. It's Mom having the hard time, really;) DS was told he was in the top 10%, just not enough slots. Please forgive as we are new to all of this, but if this is the case, wonder why he would have not been wait-listed or offered NAPS, or prep? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Trying to decide if reapplying is a legit option, i.e., if he were actually highly ranked, then maybe go for it. If being told you are in the top 10% (but you weren't offered wait list or NAPS/prep) is a nice way to let you down? Thank you.

no naps/waitlist

I can't speak to the waitlist, but our DS was told by his BGO that naps was not an option for him because he was 3'qd. If your DS is top 10% I'm thinking that naps wouldn't be an option for him.

Sorry about the TWE, momof2017er. Our mom hearts always hurt for our kids when they are disappointed. But if he got an appointment to USMA, my recommendation is for him to go to West Point, and move on. It is true that there simply are not enough slots for all the excellent candidates who apply. I wish him the best in the future!

Who told him he was in the top 10%? I may be wrong but I don't think USNA gives out that information.

twe,wait list & naps

Sorry to hear about your son's TWE but West Point is a great Service Academy. He should be proud to have received an appointment. When did he get his USNA letter? We must be the only nes still awaiting what we assume is TWE! My son has applied again, this time as enlisted and I too am wondering who told your son he was in top 10%? Was it on his letter? Normally they do not put that, usually the form letter which tells you nothing. Kids are resilient though, mine started last month with pros and cons of going to USNA as opposed to applying for PLC & OCS in USMC.

to haz: BGO. Thanks to all for responses. So appreciate this site for it's candid, thoughtful and thorough insight and experience. Applying and getting into/being rejected by the SA's is such a different experience than "civilian" schools, that I had to join this forum in order to have other people who understand what it's like be able to give frank and informative feedback. Thank you again.

DS received his TWE almost two weeks ago. The very best of luck to your son. Only now can I understand what moms (and dads) go through with both the LOR and an appointment. Proud of all the young men and women who take the time to go through this process to serve others. Gives me great optimism for the future.

If it was the BGO then maybe he was saying top 10% of his candidates. If your DS has his heart set on USNA then he should try again next year. Good luck and hope it all works out for him

Momof2017er,

I empathize with your parental disappointment with the TWE. I've watched with interest on those who received USNA appointments - both here and in our geographic region. One thing that strikes me is how many 2nd and 3rd time applicants received appointments to USNA. On the appointment thread just last night I noticed that a NMMI applicant from the MOC district adjacent to ours was appointed. This speaks to their dedication to serve, their fortitude, and their persistence (not to overlook their academic accomplishments, service, and leadership).

My DS too received his USNA TWE about 2 weeks ago and he too just shrugged it off since USMA was his number one choice. I know my son's credentials and they might have not won his district but they were out of this world. I am in awe of the quality of those who apply to the service academies, and I'm sure your son was in that pool. If your son chooses to try for USNA again, I wish him the best and encourage him to execute his Plan B (just in case), but instead I hope we meet on R-Day or A-Day at West Point.

I hesitate to say it on this thread but, "Go Army :thumb:, Beat Navy!"
