US Military Academy Prep School?

Just today, I received an email from my region's West Point admissions officer, and she said that I got into the US Military Academy Prep School. After doing some research, I was still a bit confused as to what is USMAPS? Is it a high school, a junior college? Furthermore my admissions officer said I could accept the offer on my candidate portal in the overview section, but I don't see any option to do so. Furthermore, her emails always have a download that says log in key chain? What is that? Lastly, is it weird to be accepted to USMaps but not SLE?

Many questions, here is a first pass:

USMAPS is a traditional prep school, in this case it is not a college nor high school nor junior college – it has the sole purpose of “prep”ing prospects for USMA. AFAIK there are no college credits per se in the sense that they would apply towards a degree program or transfer to another institution, unlike a senior military college or a civil prep school (including a junior military college such as MMI, NMMI, etc.)

Generally people are offered a slot at USMAPS because they are not academically qualified for USMA however they are strong candidates in other ways. A friend of mine went because he was active duty in the Army and his sergeant suggested he attend West Point but he had no college experience and did not spend his high school years trying to get into West Point, yet he excelled at USMAPS and is a USMA grad now. From what I read, it is quite intensive academically, and it offers a golden opportunity for the ultimate appointment to USMA if you do well.

I would say that most people think the USMAPS option is outstanding, and not “weird” in comparison to attendance at SLE – I don’t see a real connection there of significant substance that might warrant a broad evidence that implied any sense of weirdness.

I’d say it’s a good thing. Don’t know at all about the “key chain” reference.

USMAPS is given to those who are active candidates - ie those who applied to c/o 2017 - and were not academically qualified for some reason. If you are a junior and applied to SLE, I would say you got that email by mistake.

Reply to her and ask for clarification.
