Well folks, all good things must come to an end. My younger brother and I have received our QNS letters. Due to my age I am not eligible to reapply next year so this was my one and only hurrah before I was disquified for admission. As easy as it would be to be disappointed, the fact that my QNS means someone more qualified will fill that spot is all that matters. At the end of the day we are all here to serve the needs of the army in the capacity deemed necessary by the chain of command, and I trust their judgement since it has not failed us yet. I will gladly step down so that others who are more capable may lead. I have my backup plans already set in motion, and despite whichever plan I pursue, all roads lead to the army. Even though I did not get to take the path of my choice, the ultimate goal is service through an officer commission and that is all that matters.

Thank you to everyone here who has answered questions of mine, I appreciate all of your time and effort. To those who received QNS letters, continue to pursue excellence in all that you do, the army needs strong, capable leaders more than ever; it doesn't end here. To those appointed, fight hard at USMA and never give up, you were appointed for a reason. Do those of us who were rejected proud, and I hope to serve alongside you some day.

I wish everyone the best in all they do, and thank you again for providing such a supportive community. Godspeed.

USMATx2017, I want you to understand, you were not rejected. You are qualified, just not selected; there is a huge difference. This year there were 16,000 who started an application and you became one of 1900 on the WNL. I’m truly sorry, you were not selected, but hold your head high, you qualified! That is more than others can say. Good luck on your new goals.

Encourage your brother to try again

USMATx2017,

Godspeed in your endeavors. I wish only all those who were not selected had such a positive attitude and balanced outlook! I am sure that your road may take a different path, but that someday you will earn the commission you so strongly desire...

I received my QNS letter today, and I am closing the chapter on West Point. This forum has been a fantastic resource and I really appreciate the support and advice that I have received. Congratulations to those who received an appointment, and I hope those who received a QNS took the advice of SAF contributors regarding Plan B. I will be attending the Carroll School of Management at Boston College on an Army ROTC Scholarship this Fall. My path to becoming an Army Officer is defined, and now it is up to me.

Perhaps rejected is a bit of a harsh word, agreed. As it pertains to my brother, I will encourage him to apply again as he enters public university.

Best of luck to you in ROTC. You may find that it provides a more satisfactory balance of liberty and discipline than USMA would have given you. The advantage to your situation is that if you begin to feel differently a month or so down the road, you will have your ROTC commander's ability to nominate at your disposal. My older brother did not receive his appointment to USMA until his second attempt, and in between those years he attended a year of AROTC as well. My only counsel to you would be that you push yourself to maintain the highest of academic, physical, and leadership standards so that you not only become the best leader you can, but that if you ever decide to try for USMA again you will be well prepared and set up for success.

I do have one question that remains: what are the ramifications of receiving a QNS letter? Say the scenario arises that 50 appointed cadets, for various reasons, end up having to withdraw their admissions acceptance and the class then has vacancies. Will admissions fill those spots, or simply allow the class to drop in appointments? Also, if admissions sees fit to fill those spots, do they appoint from people who received a QNS or is there a handful of files they do not QNS just in case?

I ask this with the full understanding that, having received a QNS, I will be pursuing Plan B and will not count USMA as an option now. A friend of mine who applied to USAFA received a QNS letter, but was still available for appointments if admissions needed to appoint after having filled the class initially. On account of this, my curiosity was piqued.

I appreciate your confidence in me. I believe Winston Churchill summed it up the best in his first address to the House of Commons when he was Prime Minister.

“I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be;"

Victory at all costs...however long and hard the road may be; I can get behind that.

Due to my age I am not eligible to reapply next year....

So sorry to hear that you are QNS.
Are you sure that you are not age eligible to reapply next year?
The age requirement is that you are not 23 on R-day.
IOW - if your 23rd birthday is after R-Day then you are still age eligible.

Unfortunately, my birthday is June 18th. I will turn 22 this year, and the year after I will miss the age deadline by a mere two weeks.

Edit:// my apologies, I will be 22 this year, 23 next year.

You will be 22 next June 18 which makes you NOT 23 by R-day, which makes you still age eligible for next year. You will still be 22 by R-day.

You will be 22 next June....22 comes before 23, doesn't that mean you will still be eligible?

I edited my previous post, I am currently 21 and wil be 22 this June. Next June I will be 23. My apologies, I was doing Chinese homework at the time of the post and I got tangled between languages.

Excellent Plan B. Congratulations on putting it together. Work hard and perhaps someday you'll be commanding those academy alumni! :thumb:

Sorry to hear the news, but you have every reason to be proud - being qualified by USMA is an accomplishment in and of itself. And your positive attitude, your response here and the way you've conducted yourself on these forums speaks volumes, as you're already looking past yourself and serving as an example and leader for others. :thumb:

Best of luck to you, and keep pressing on!

+1

Best of luck to you as well Bball23 - and thank you for pursuing a life of service to our country!
