DS is going to a D1 school next year and will be an AFROTC cadet majoring in engineering. He wants to try out for marching band also. I'm looking for some guidance about how feasible and/or advisable band would be on top of academic and ROTC obligations. We've discussed that academics come first and ROTC second, but having followed this forum for a few months now, would the time commitment required for AFROTC prohibit taking on another big EC?

I currently know two AFROTC cadets doing both. One is an Engineering major and another one majors in one of the most difficult science disciplines, they seem to be doing just fine. There haven't been many conflicts with AFROTC as the band mainly practices at night. As long as they're up front with the band director and let them know it's school, ROTC, and then band as far as priorities go, they should be accommodating. One is even in AAS on top of all that, so it can be done.

Thanks Non Ducor,
I appreciate knowing that it can be done. I'm still undecided as to how wise an idea it is, but I'm glad that it's possible. This came as a bit of a surprise to me this week because I didn't think DS was going to pursue band at college. My concern was acclimating to a new situation and more challenging courses and only having three semesters before going up for SFT. Your words have put me a bit more at ease. Thanks for the response.:thumb:

It really depends on the student, some can juggle 6 balls at once, some have trouble keeping 2 in the air.

Sure it can be done but it's not a snap, it will take some time management and sacrifice of other activities at times.

Nice thing about it is he can always give it a try, if it works out great, if it doesn't, he can always drop the Marching Band.

Best of luck to your son.
