I am attending Session 2 of the Naval Academy Summer Seminar 2013. I've been doing a pretty decent amount of digging, but I can't seem to find any information on the awawards that are given at the end of NASS. Can anyone tell me what they are? I'm trying to be as competitive as possible and get the best scores and reports that I can. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I vaguely remember an awards ceremony, but I can assure you it's not at all important.

Probably little certificates for being the most motivated candidate ever or whatnot.

Okay thanks. I wasn't sure if they were that big of a deal or not. Still going to try my best though! Thanks.

NASS is really not about "getting the best scores you can," or "being the most competitive" other than perhaps in the CFA.

What will make you stand out is giving it your all/doing your best, helping out your squadmates, and being a team player. Were you the guy/gal who was all about "me" and "I" or the one who was all about "we?"

Yes, the squad leader fills out some sort of evaluation but the above is what will count.

Honestly, many candidates at NASS were qualified to receive the awards. The amount of awards I can remember were basically two or three per company. I received an appointment without being awarded anything at NASS. So, that being said, your focus should not be wasted on that. Work hard, be a great squad mate, and ask questions to further guide your decision making.

The above is what our child was told too. Be a motivator, a helper and an encouraging squadmate. DON'T be that kid who is clearly trying to shine, to the detriment of others. DO YOUR BEST...and help others to do their best too.
Most kids coming have had a lot of leadership and will or should understand the importance of the above.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm definitely a motivator and a team player so I think I'm ready and I'm excited for that aspect. I am really going to kind of treat the week as a job interview and be on point for a lot of things while still being friendly and motivating and helpful to everyone else. Again, I appreciate everyone's advice! I'm really excited for NASS!

Doing well at NASS is obviously going to be a plus - whether you win any awards or not. The mere fact that you were selected for NASS is a plus (but a guarantee of nothing).

If you ask me, NASS is great for having something to talk about when you do your MOC interviews. Without so much as saying so, it suggests, "The Naval Academy likes me - why wouldn't you?" :)

There is an award at NASS called "hit squad"
My squad got it. It just means that your squad was the most motivated/ had the best teamwork during "sea trials" or the mini trials they put you through.

My DS never had sea trials ,last year. Weather probs.

Huh? They canceled Sea Trials for the Class of 2015 for weather? Are you sure? Maybe there were certain stations they canceled for that reason. But, I can't imagine them tanking the whole thing.

That would be like canceling a football game because it was too cold. :)

Memphis9489, they had an abbreviated "mock sea trials" experience at Nass for the class of 2017 because of very hot weather, my son said they had a couple of hours. He said there were awards in the stadium the last day. Primarily for leadership and CFA. He said most of the kids slept during the awards ceremony. He did suggest not to 1.) quit or not participate in anything 2.)bomb the CFA. He said be prepared to laugh and that the entire wk was hilarious.

Ohhhhh ... never mind. I thought you had a midshipman who, as a Plebe, had his Sea Trials canceled.

Carry on ... :)

Thanks for the info everyone! Really do appreciate it. About once a month for the past 4 years I just sit down and look up stuff about the Academy and the Navy in general and cna't help but to be extremely excited! July 8th is just around the corner! If anyone else is in Session 2 you can personal message me. I'd enjoy getting to know some guys before I get there.

For What it's Worth

If I could give my previous self in that same situation advice, I'd tell him to relax, enjoy the experience, focus on taking in what it's like at the academy, and get to know the other people in the program, rather than focusing on trying to make an impression or seeing hidden tests or worrying about the evaluations the detailers might or might not make. If you make a really, really good impression, that might be worth a point or even a point and half on the whole person score. If you try too hard, or make an ass of yourself, that might loose you more points. If you relax and enjoy yourself, you're unlikely to suffer either extreme.

Awards at NASS

Our son did receive an award at NASS for outstanding candidate in his company. He did not know there were awards and was surprised and honored to receive it. His take on it was to focus on team work, positive attitude and full participation in all facets of the program (many of the the things that get you into NASS in the first place). He said quite a few of his fellow participants could have received that award. Get there ready to hit the CFA with your best effort.
