Sending score reports to ROTC?

Greetings. New to the forums so please be patient with me!

My ds is finishing his junior year and wants to apply to USAFA, USCGA, and for an AFROTC scholarship. He is scheduled to take both the SAT and the ACT for the first time in June.

Question: He has the option to send score reports from both tests to four schools/scholarships for free. Would you recommend sending reports to the Academies and to the AFROTC scholarshlp option? Based on his PSAT scores he is hoping to do well (obviously) but wondering if it's best to send them sight unseen?

This will be a personal preference and you may hear a variety of opinions, but here goes!

I would recommend waiting and sending them later. Your DS will probably find he does better on or feels more comfortable with one test format than the other and that will impact which scores you send. Also, I would recommend planning to sit for the preferred test a second time as soon as he can. He will likely see an improvement.

My DS preferred ACT, but was much more familiar with that test format since he had started taking it in middle school to qualify for a special school program. He sat for ACT several times and SAT twice. I believe I have read that the 1st 3 times that students sit for the ACT they average a 2 point increase in scores each sitting (after that it can decrease)! DS ended up with 34 composite I believe (35 superscored - one subject decreased slightly the last sitting). 2nd sitting of SAT increased significantly and ended up with mid 700's for each test (out of 800).

Army ROTC will just take a screen shot of the SAT/ACT website with your scores on it in an email. Just saying....

I'm applying for the AROTC, and I was in the same situation. I went ahead and sent Cadet Command my scores before I took it, which gave me more resolve to do well!

I studied the ACT Prep Book every day after school and got a 29! So send it and use it as a motivating factor!

Just remember the SAs superscore, AFROTC takes best sitting. Personally, I think it is no harm no foul if you send it in, if he decides to take it again in Sept, and he does better in that sitting, they will change his records to reflect the new score.

FWIW, the avg SAT score for AFROTC scholarships range between mid 1200 to mid 1300s depending on the type of scholarship(1,2,and 7) and the major (tech vs non tech).

That should be his goal for SATs.

I think we'll go with sending the reports (prior to receiving results) as the price really seems to add up. We'll use our four freebies for USAFA, USCGA, Virginia Tech, and AFROTC. Hopefully they have a system for storing them as he hasn't actually applied to any of these places yet.

I also want to add, that if your DS is specifically taking standardized tests solely for ROTC, I would recommend taking the ACT's instead. One of the benefits of ACT, is that you can choose whether you want to do the writing portion - which ROTC does not require ... saves you I think $15. Something to consider.

I also found that taking the ACT was a bit easier for me - yielding a slightly higher score than my SAT score. But, to each their own.
