Hi, I had gotten a TWE this year. I have been considering re-applying to the USNA, I had my heart set on it for some time. I have also been accepted to the Citadel, unfortunately the GPA for most Knobs is around 2.7. Does the Naval Academy take that into consideration? Or do they just want to see good enough grades?

Second, I'm a tad stupid so bear with me, but when would I start this process - the second I attend college, the end of the first semester, or the beginning of sophomore year?

Third, a bit stupid, but is it wise to send in another application - now. For the following year, or would I have to wait until my sophomore year?

I have to declare my official decision by later today, if you had to recommend a school (should I want to reapply to the USNA, which I do) would you recommend a decent civilian college like Hofstra or The Citadel? Or should i just attend the Citadel?

Thanks.

I don't think you can go wrong by attending The Citadel IMHO. Provided you can afford it for four years. I'm confident that just as they consider the high school profile, they also consider the college profile. Attending an SMC would
also reflect well on your application. Enroll in Naval ROTC while you are there as a backup plan and an indication of how badly you want Navy, and yes you should submit your application this year as opposed to sophomore year. Finally, be prepared to fall in love with the Citadel and want to stay there all 4 years. This is partly why I recommend you only attend there if you can afford to attend all four years. Of course the other reason is if your re-application is unsuccessful.

Your are being realistic about the knobs average of GPA of 2.7, but that doesn't mean your GAP will be 2.7. It could be lower or higher.

Unless you maxed SAT or ACT, take it one more time. Attending a college does not change your SAT/ACT score. This is something you can improve whereas you can't do anythinga about your high school GPA.

Ask for feedback from your BGO/Admissions office. Someone should be able to tell you main reasons why you got a TWE.

The application cycle starts in late Spring/early summer, so if you plan to apply for the class starting the summer of 2014, you need to start your application this summer.

Good Luck

Attend a college with NROTC

I would add to my earlier comment about attending the Citadel that, wherever you go, you should definitely enroll in the NROTC program. While I'm sure Hofstra is a fine school it does not have an NROTC program. If there is another college to which you've been accepted that you are also considering, and that college has an NROTC program, then that's a very big pro in that colleges list of pros and cons.

I'm not on the academy boards, or even in the Navy. However, if I were on the boards and a re-applicant was already in NROTC then that would be additional points in my own mind as the candidate already demonstrated their commitment to Navy.

Would it make that much of a difference? For example, am I hurting my chances of admission if I went to Hofstra as opposed to going to the Citadel?

And my SAT scores weren't necessarily the best, how big of a deal with this play? If I mantain a 3.5 - 3.75 GPA while at College will they really care about my SAT scores?

Have you read the sticky above re reapplying. It's a good place to start and likely will answer many of your questions.

Yes, I have, and I apologize. I don't mean to be annoying, but I really, really, really want to attend the Academy. If you could outline what I need to do to receive an appointment by this time next year, I can't tell you how much I'd appreciate it. I don't mean to annoy and I apologize if I am...any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

If you look at what I wrote I think you'll find that I was expressing my opinion. As I said in an earlier post I do not sit on the boards and cannot make any claim as to whether or not it makes a difference. If you read the sticky on re-applying you'll see participation in NROTC is not mentioned. Decision is yours on what you think will make the best re-application going forward.

Usna 1985 please i need advice!!!

Would it help me out by going to the Citadel instead of Hofstra? Or is it pretty much the same? Thanks.

Already gave you my opinion on this one but there is excellent feedback on this very question on your other threads. I did have one more comment about Hofstra and NROTC. If you go to Hofstra, and again get a QNS letter when you re-apply, what's your plan B to commission in the Navy? Seems to me if you go to a school with NROTC and enroll as a college programmer, you are already in your plan B. So your worse case scenario is already in place. Just my two cents.

From a purely USNA standpoint, (within some reason) it doesn't make a huge difference which 4-yr university you attend.

I would pick the school you most want to attend for all of the other reasons you are making your selection. As others have said, if for some reason USNA doesn't work out again, you will want to continue on with your new Plan A, so make it a great one!

Hmm, ok. Thanks.

So the USNA absolutely doesn't care as to what college it is, just that it has to be a good state school - and you obviously have to do well. Relatively self explanatory.

In regards to the whole process, I'm assuming I would follow what I did last year - that being finish up my initial application this summer. Get a congressional nom this time around, and eventually finish up the whole application by midyear. Hypothetically speaking, lets say everything goes as expected, would I be able to attend after my initial year in college (my second year so to speak)

Provided I do well, will they appreciate the fact that I'm reapplying? Thanks.

The answers are yes, and yes. (Re)read the stickie.

I don't know for sure, but the way I look at it is I am pretty sure there is only one system to evaluate candidates. If standardized test score is a big part, suddenly we ignore it for reapplicants?

No disrespect to other colleges, but you can take only several classes and don't do anything else. Academics wise, perhaps no differences, but available time to study not the same. How about grade inflation?

If I was in your shoes and I really want to attend the Naval Academy, I do everything I can to improve anything I can. Can't improve your high school GPA, but you can improve your SAT.

Good luck.

Candidly, USNA currently DOES want re-apps to retake the SAT/ACT scores. Also, class standing is becoming more significant than GPA, primarily because GPA computations have become to diverse to be real and reliable predictors performance potential.

Class standing, are your referring to HS or College? Thanks.

He is referring to HS. College Class Rank is very different since it is both college w/in the university, major w/in the college, etc. I'm not even sure my class rank appeared on my college transcript (but now you have me curious... may have to dig it out).

To add to earlier statements ... retake the SAT and ACT to get those scores up high if you want to compete. Your grades in college validate your effort and ability.
