I've seen these abbreviations everywhere.

From context: son or daughter at a service academy? My guess

But what exactly do they stand for?

You know, until I found that acronym stickie years ago I had surmised it stood for Distinguished Son/Daughter. With all the accomplishments of these kids it made perfect sense to me!

It took me two weeks to get that it meant son or daughter... had no clue what it actually stood for until i found the sticky... gotta love TacticalNuke!

I thought it was "darndest" daughter/son. Notice there is no ironic emoticon.

The usage of "DS and DD" seems to be more prevalent on sites like College Confidential or parenting websites. It wasn't all that long ago that I had to google the meaning. For years I constantly heard the term DH assuming it was a pet name for Designated Hitter (in a reference to baseball). Nope, it stands for "Dear Husband".
