What is a good, reliable, reasonably priced, watch that I can get for USMAPS and the academy? I don't want to just get any one that I see on the shelf.

Fwiw dont know about west point but I picked up a pretty inexpensive timex ironman the week before I went into basic training and kept if for close to 8 years and it endured everything I threw at it...

I would take a look in a military gear magazine. They will have watches in there that will handle the strain of the field and such pretty well.

G Shock or Iron Man are great watches. G Shock are a little more expensive. Get it in black.

Casio has been the Army's watch company for generations.

Be careful getting watches such as Suunto or other expensive military watches as they will have GPS in them. I do not think GPS is allowed for Land Nav and you don't want to be without a watch.

(Suunto are great watches, though. Every watch should have a barometer :> )

Just my $.02 but as an infantryman the most predominant watches I see (including mine ) is the G Shock. It's a great durable watch that will last a long long time. I live mine!

I got a Luminox black dive watch. Very expensive, but can take a beating. That's what I'll be using these next four years and maybe after.

I'm using a Casio Illuminator right now that I like. I would also highly recommend the G-Shock, I loved mine until I lost it.

Whatever kind you get, I highly recommend that it has some kind of backlight or lit dials; it will help for checking the time at night. An alarm would also be helpful.

Also... a dull colored watch would also be advised. :thumb:

We are thinking of getting DS the G-Shock G9300-1 with digital compass. Does anyone know if new cadets are allowed to have the compass feature on their watch during Beast?

That is the watch we got for our DS last year before he went to beast (G9300 solar). He loved it and it is still going strong. He never said that there was a problem with the compass feature not being allowed.

Just a bit of advice, get a cheap watch for beast - your cadet will be doing some very physical training, and the likelihood of breaking, getting scratched, getting lost makes using a $200 luminox or $200 g9300 somewhat risky. Other than the cadet who posted here about a great watch he had until it got lost, I know my son and both of his roommates all went through at least 2 watches in their first two years. A good ironman goes for about $35. You can always get good watch that can be worn everyday as an A-Day gift or graduation.

personally, i think learning the Army compass would be best. the G Shock with a compass might be too tempting to use. I know G Shock makes a great $59 watch. I do not know the CBT regulations regarding compasses on watches.

I used the timex ironman, with stopwatch and alarm feature (not too loud)

never broke, still wear it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I appreciate it. I think we will hold off on the G-Shock G9300-1 until after Beast.

Be careful with the band; this is a weak point with this watch. I know someone who has had to replace the band twice. To eliminate future failure, he now has a watch for the field, and another for everyday use.

PM me for the details.
