If a cadet wins a rhode scholarship are they able to apply for a pilot slot after they have graduated from Oxford?

Apmeyer,

I don't know for sure how it works, but I would assume that it would work the same as other people who go to grad school- you get your masters degree and then go to pilot training afterward.

Thanks FlyingFuzz! Do you know if they go to grad school knowing that they have a pilot training slot or do they try to get a slot while there?

You get your job while at the academy. Whether that job is pilot, logistics, intel, whatever. You already know what your job is. If you get accepted to grad school, of any kind, your job is simply put on hold until your grad school is done. You've probably seen the poster on here; Hornet. He is at Rand getting his PhD. He finishes up in the next few weeks after 3 years. He's getting ready to head to pilot training. He's had his pilot slot since the academy. FWIW: My son is at the same school getting his PhD and he too has his pilot slot and will be attending UPT when he graduates Rand in 2 more years.

You're going to give me an aneurysm. Few WEEKS?! Ain't nobody got time for that! If I only had a few weeks, I'd curl up in a ball and weep. My dissertation is no where near done.

No, I graduate 1 Oct. Phew. :) But yes, you maintain your job in most cases (certain jobs like OSI lose their slot and have to reapply). However, the base (except ENJJPT recipients) can change. One of my cohort mates originally had Columbus but he received Laughlin on his RIP this year. He's lucky and got picked up for CRO instead (to Vegas!). :) I have my RIP to Laughlin and should receive my official orders to PCS there around July/August.

For those that got a Rhodes or a Marshall, well, a couple of them are friends of mine and those that had pilot slots came back to the pilot grind like everyone else.

And, just to be long winded, grad school is where pilots go to die. I can attest to many of my classmates dropping their pilot slots while in grad school. I nearly dropped mine. Of the three in my cohort from USAFA 2010, all had pilot slots: I kept mine, one is going CRO, and one is pursuing OSI. A few of my Harvard and MIT friends have dropped their pilot slots as well.

Sorry bud. I'm glad you have more time. I thought you graduated in July. Glad to know you have a little more time. Del Rio in June/July is torture. Getting there in October is a bit better to get accustomed to.

I am thinking the weather will be easy to get accustomed to quickly. Now getting accustomed to a town that doesn't have a Target, just Wal-Mart coming from San Diego, might be a little bit harder.

Del Rio reminds me of when we were in AK, and watching national commercials. Nothing ticks you off more when you see a commercial for even a place like Outback/Chilis/Ruby Tuesday and realize you don't even have those options because the only chain restaurant is Applebees. Not that it would be your 1st choice, but at least you have more than one choice.

I can see Hornet putting a lot of mileage on his car driving to San Antonio for some real world time!

OBTW back on topic, I understand Hornet's post about many not going to UPT after an ED assignment. That time off makes you question do you want to move forward academically, more than flying anything in the AF inventory.
