Hi, I'm a senior in High school who's going to attend Hofstra this coming fall. It's been my dream to attend a FSA, if someone could be so kind to outline what I would need to do to be able to transfer and receive an appointment at West Point, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks, and I apologize if I am annoying anyone.

Apply for senator and congressional nominations NOW. Deadline is approaching.

...and I had received a nomination to the USMMA, but turned it down. Would there be a restriction for me applying for another nomintation? In other words, would I have to wait another year or so? Or does it not matter? Or does it depend on the Representative? Thanks again.

Most nom sources don't close until the Fall at the earliest...

does that mean you should wait? the opportunity to send in the application is open, so take advantage. Especially since he needs LOR's and will be leaving high school. It is harder to ask a college professor who just met you and won't attempt to learn your name.

Yo comprendo Jefe, any other advice is greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated.

PULL UPS! and Run. When you go to Hofstra, take chem, physics, calc., AND a writing course. My BF was turned down from USNA his senior year, he took all those classes at a 4-year college, earned a 3.7 GPA and got in this year. His PFE scores slightly improved. Keep in mind only 1/3 of appointments go to high school graduates, the rest go to preps and college students of 1, 2 even 3 years of college completed.

You must renew your nominations. I received one for usna and usmma last year. I got into prep for usmma, but still need to apply for a new one even though I will be a prep this upcoming school year for class of 2018.

When you say renew my nominations, I'm assuming you're saying I have to go through the process again (which I have no problem with)?

Your bf, how close did he come to being admitted his senior year? And did his time in high school actually effect his admission package? I'm assuming they'd care more about him "manning up" so to speak, busting his a** and doing well then reapplying to USNA then his time in HS.

And how hard is it for a professor to write a LOR? Is it really impossible for the them to write it?

...and provided you get a 3.7 GPA, how necessary is it for you to retake the SAT's? And provided I do get a 3.7 GPA, and I do show maturity by reapplying - will the MOC/Representative be more willing to recommend them? Thanks.

Please take a few hours to read through the various reapplying threads on here. They will answer 99% of your questions.

Unless you have terrific SAT scores already, retake them. They are the only national standard scoring method the academy has.

You do not show maturity by re-applying. Re-applying shoes determination. Only maturity shows maturity.

MOCs can do whatever they want. Re-applying may impress them or it may not. In either case chances are if you are competing against 10 more qualified candidates than you, you will not get the MOCs nomination. Therefore excel in all you do... including SAT scores.

Had you read the stickies carefully, as was recommended in your other threads, you would have already known you need to redo everything except the DoDMERB exam since it is good for 2 years. You should also contact the candidate guidance office. I know you did not receive as nom to USNA but they can be helpful and answer most of your questions. Again, this is in the stickies. I don't mean to be rude, and I'm sure I and others will be more than willing to answer any further questions you have, but I have to say you show a certain lack of "something" by not reaching out to the official resources available to you. You need to treat this just as if you were applying for the first time and work your a$$ off on academics, SATs, leadership, etc. There was something you lacked last year or you would have gotten a MOC nom to USNA (unless I'm missing something). Simply re-applying, while a good thing, will not overcome that. Work on it, work on it, work on it.

Alllright, I'm sorry If I'm annoying anyone...

Just one question, does the USNA/USMA want College LOR's? Would it be Ok if my professor wrote a LOR? Or would that be frowned upon? Thanks...

My recommendations,

Slow down

Spend some time on whatever service academy admissions website. The website will contain about 80 to 90% of information you will get from this forum, plus they will be more accurate.

This forum is great, but some advices sucks or are inaccurate.

Find a your local liasion officer - For West Point, if you open an application, there is a section that tells you who your liasion officer is. You might not have one, if so you can contact the admissions office directly. You can contact the admissions office directly at any time, but that could annoy the full time staff

My question for you is, how hard is it for a Candidate to get a college professor to write them a LOR? Is it really that impossible? Thanks.

It is as hard as you make it. If you do something to annoy them, they won't be helpful. If you're a solid student and good person, they'll probably work with you. Certainly not impossible

I don't know.

But, if you don't take English, Math, or Physical Science during your first year at your college, it will default to your high school.

I believe you mean "School Official’s Evaluation (SOE) Forms" not a letter of recommendation. LOR can be a letter saying what a wonderful student you are and you will make a fine Army officer. But this is not what West Point erequiers. What is required is English, Math, and Physical Science teachers answer 8 short questions about your performance and potential. If you applied this year and didn't get in, when you apply again, the system will recognize you and transfer your data. From what I seen SOEs automatically transfer (I could be wrong)

My recommendation is for you to plan to get SOE from your college professors. At the begining of the year, introduce yourself to your professor. Sit in front during lectures, instead of hanging out in the back; be a good student, raise your hand to answer questions and ask question, and get good grades. This will increase your chance of getting a SOE from your college professor.

Great advice! For candidates in college, regardless of how many High School SOEs that are sent in, at least two SOEs have to come from college professors/instructors.

You've received some accurate and inaccurate information on this thread - so let's just start over.

I am going to assume that you have never applied to West Point but that you did apply to another SA.

First - you can not transfer to WP from college. No credits will transfer. It is possible to validate out of some classes but you will take the validation tests during Beast.

Apply: You need to open a file with WP admissions: http://www.usma.edu/admissions/SitePages/Apply.aspx

Medical: Your DoDMERB will be good for 2 years so if you were Qualified medically, then that is something that you will not have to do again.

Nominations: You need to apply to all nominations that you are qualified for which at a minimum is your 2 Senators, your Congressman and the VP
If you have a Presidential nom, there is no need to re-apply for that.
If you are going to be in ROTC in college, that is another nom that may be available to you.
Go on the web sites of your MOCs and look at their application for a nom from them. Some may not have info up for the 2018 year but keep checking. They all basically ask for the same things.
No need to rush on applying for the MOC noms. Just check their deadlines (usually early Fall) and meet the deadline. The reason not to rush is that you may have some additions to your application between now and the deadline and it is easier and safer to have the most up to date application sent rather than send in updates piecemeal.
MOC noms are not rolling. IOW - they do not select noms or hold interviews until after the deadline.
So - just go to their websites, be informed of the deadlines and wait until early Fall to submit your application to them.

Classes to take Freshman year: Math (preferably Calculus), English, Science (preferably Chemistry with Lab), US History and consider ROTC.
It is very important that you do well in these classes. Doing well means make A's and B's but A's obviously are better.

ACT/SAT:
Retake you SAT. Take is every time it is offered until the application deadline (end of February).
Also, take the ACT and take it every time it is offered until the application deadline. You may do better on the ACT than the SAT but you won't know unless you take it.
Having the best test scores that you can make is SO very important.
So take multiple times and get the best superscore you can on the SAT and ACT.

SOE's:
You will need SOE's from your English, Math, and Science professors. You have an advantage in that you know that now. So when you start your classes in the Fall, make sure these professors know you. Get to know them. Do well in their classes. They will have all semester to get to know you because West Point will not evaluate your application until after they get your 1st semester transcript. Therefore, you can request the SOEs towards the end of the semester.

When to have a complete file:
Aim to finish your file by December. You can update your file until the application deadline in FEB but have your file completed by the end of the year and send in updates after that to your RC

RC and FFR:
Look at this map and click on the state that you live in and see who your Regional Commander is. He will be your point of contact during your admissions process.
FFR (Field Force Rep) is your local liaison who will help you through the process. Once you open a file, your FFR will be aware of your application and can make contact with you.

Learn about West Point:
If you have your heart set on a sea service, then you may not be happy in the Army and WP may not be for you. Learn all you can about West Point and the Army. Read books, watch youtube, talk to cadets and grads. Go to a WP admissions event in your area and see if you can make it to a Congressional Academy Day. Look here for these events that may be in your area.
Try to visit West Point. Hofstra is not far from West Point so make a day visit during the Fall. Visit on a football weekend. On the admissions page is a link to sign up for a day visit. You will get an admissions brief and then you will follow a cadet for the day. You will go to some classes with them, eat in the mess hall, see the barracks, etc. You really need to see West Point before you will know if that is the best place for you.

Stickies: My shameless plug - look through the stickies in the USMA forum section.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions here.
The USMA forum is blessed with folks who know a lot about the admissions process and about the Army, several of whom have already given you great info on this thread.
We are here to help. :thumb:
