I was appointed to the Class of 2017 USAFA, and going in it seems that everyone has a general idea of clubs to join and whatnot. I was just curious if we could get a thread that just talks about some of the clubs, especially if there are any current cadets on here that could provide some insight. Specific or general information would be helpful.

I am particularly looking a the Ski Club, Wings of Blue, and a couple others.

Can someone provide some insight regarding how Cadets make time for their clubs, what benefits they provide, how they are run, etc?

For example the ski club, do they take relatively consistent trips up the mountain? Is there a skill level requirement, as I am not the most experienced person on skis, etc.

Anyone can join ski club. You sign up at the beginning of the year, and they take buses to the mountains almost every blue weekend during ski season. There is no skill level required. Wings of Blue is more of a team than a club. You have to take basic free fall the summer after your freshmen year, and them you try out for the team at beginning of sophomore year. Hope this helps.

I was chatting with DS this weekend and I asked him about Wings of Blue. He is not on the team by some of his squad mates are. C3Cs start on Wings of Green which is very competitive to get on. Then cadets move up to Wings of Blue as C2Cs. Both teams require a high commitment of time including missing most of the holidays (Thanksgiving, much of Christmas break, etc). Sounded to me like an outstanding opportunity requiring an outstanding level of commitment.

I understand from my about to graduate C1C DD that many clubs, non-IC teams, etc. may/will be affected next year by Sequestration related reductions. Since there are many unknowns at this time about Sequestration effects next year, no one can be certain which clubs, non-IC teams, etc. will have funding next year or into the future.

How do Cadets make time to be in these clubs? Obviously their days are chalked full from wake up to lights out, are they usually based in weekends as breaks?
Is it a commitment of some type or just a come as you can?

For the Cycling Team (a competitive club that competes at the D-2 level), cadets with LOS status practice in the afternoon instead of intramurals. Then they travel within the state and race on Saturday and Sundays during the Fall and Spring seasons.

I have no idea what LOS stands for.

LOS is limited on season I believe. And if you are organized and able to prioritize there is plenty of time for extra activities. Mostly during the afternoons after class but before ACQ (academic call to quarters)

sorry to bring up an old thread but i was looking at clubs again, and if a C4C was to join the ski/snowboarding club do they store their gear (jackets, pants, boots, board etc etc) in their rooms?

Yeah. The room is generally the most convenient place.

thanks. i was just curious because i wasn't sure how any restrictions we have as C4C's would affect storing our gear in the future

Some clubs, particularly ski clubs and what-not, have their own storage rooms. Because of new room standards, storing equipment in your room is discouraged, and may or may not be authorized for 4 degrees. However, whatever the situation, you will not have trouble finding a place to store it. Upperclassmen in the club may help, or you may speak with your training officer to get permission. It shouldn't be an issue

and above all else, for those of you concerned about time in clubs...if you really want to do it, the time will appear. it will be rather difficult as a 4 degree but don't let that get in the way of what you want to do. just don't do these things for the wrong reason

This seems relevant to this thread. Just an FYI in the past there has been a club day at the beginning of every year (not sure exactly when, I never actually went) which I believe is "mandatory" for 4 digs. Basically it is a Saturday where all the clubs set up tables and various displays and leaders/members of the clubs hang out to talk to anyone who is interested.

There are also a few clubs that hold auditions/try outs earlier than that (like during transition time right after basic). I believe Show Choir was one of these. Just wanted to put in a word about that. If any of you are interested in singing and dancing (yes like in Glee) OR if you play an instrument pretty well and like to make up parts/play by ear, you should check Show Choir out. I played in the band first semester firstie year and was in charge second semester. It was a blast and a great way to hang out and make some music.

Okay I am done. Bottom line: Club day. Go to it. Show Choir = fun.

If it means anything, I'm also a 2017 cadet, but I haven't a single clue about clubs and doubt I will fit in with any.

This statement concerns me a bit. Are you currently active in clubs/sports? If not, it would have been very difficult to secure an appointment. If you are, there are clubs/sports/activities that you can make time for. They have flying club, skydiving club, show choir, drum & bugle, rock climbing club, marathon club, combat shooting team, cycling club, and many others. I encourage you to find a slot that matches your interests and make yourself 'fit in'.

p.s. You are not a 2017 cadet, yet. You are currently an Appointee. Show up for I-Day and you become a cadet candidate (or basic cadet). You will not truly be a cadet until A-Day in August. Best wishes. :thumb:
