DS and I were talking about training oppurtunities available to cadets during the summer months between school. I realize he will be commited between his Jr and Sr. year for LDAC. What other (if any) trainings are available to him? Air Assualt, Para, combat diver... thanks for the info. :thumb:

DS did CTLT and a school along with LDAC his junior to senior summer. Was home 3 days. LDAC is the most important thing but only 29 days.

Good Luck

If your DS is contracted, he has many opportunities - Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain and Northern Warfare, CDQC (dive), Sapper School, CULP, CTLT, DCLT, Robin Sage, and various internships. Some are harder to get than others, and almost all are available in much fewer numbers given the current budget climate.

To be eligible to attend the summer after MSI year, you must be a contracted scholarship cadet. As an MSII, either scholarship or SMP. All MSIIIs are contracted - CTLT and/or internships are the most common opportunities combined with LDAC the summer before MS IV year due to time constraints.

For more information on AROTC summer training opportunities go to the Cadet Command website.

Although the summer between the sophomore and junior years seems to have the most training opportunities, there are also numerous activities available after the MS3 year. Other than CTLT, which is the most common summer training before or after LDAC, I'm aware of MS3 cadets participating in Project GO (language), CULP, Airborne and Air Assault.

He could apply for a CULP program or Project Go (language) Program to do during his first (or subsequent) summer and Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare, Northern Warfare School, CDQC...between Sophomore- Junior -Senior Year.

Tell your son to be proactive with his cadre regarding schools. My son was able to attend Winter Mountain Warfare school during his sophomore year, basically he asked the MSGT if there was anything available, he said I'll check and found him a slot. Don't wait to be offered, tell him to ask, all they can say is no.

Great advice folks, thanks. He is a 4yr scholarship awardee so hopefully he will have additional oppurtunities after MS1. Thanks again.

Make sure he asks about CULP as soon as he gets to school. The application process starts very soon after school starts. As long as he passes his APFT and gets contracted right away he'll have the opportunity for CULP....Great program.

In regards to slots for summer training opportunities - how early on should I ask the cadre about opportunities?

To add to Jcleppe's excellent suggestion, the battalion deadline for summer 2014 CULP applications will likely be in October 2013.

Since the battalion's recommendations for CULP will be based on its internal OML, this is a very good reason to perform well in the initial APFT. Otherwise, there is not much to go on should they be willing to consider a freshman. Most contracted freshmen are not focused on CULP or are not ready to commit to spending almost a month overseas, so your son would have an advantage.

Prime time to go to schools is the summer between MSII/MSIII. You can ask at anytime but remember the cadre make an internal OML for slot selection so you better be doing well if you want a shot.

Roger! Out of curiosity - for big Bn's, like Penn State - is it at all likely to get chances at slots as MS1's?

Possible but not likely.

I think you can't even put a cadet into CCIMS for schools until they are an MSII or until the very end of MSI year when the slots are filled. In addition contracted MSIs can still drop out of the program which would be a total waste of a school slot

Bottom-line is it can happen but I wouldn't count on it
