Lately someone was asking about the AROTC officer presenting the 4 yr scholarship at the high school level.

Well, I just wanted to say how impressed we were with the LSU dept. of Military Science AROTC. Last night, not one but three dignitaries attended my DS senior award ceremony to present his scholarship. The three officers drove over an hour and sat there throughout the entire ceremony. They represented the AROTC program so well. (and they looked fabulous in their dress blues:smile:)

Grant was so honored to have LTC Lawrence M. Burns, MSG (P) Clay C. Usie and Major Kurt Talbot award his scholarship. It is so refreshing to know that my DS will be in the hands of these wonderful people. They definitely made an impression on him and everyone there.

I did upload two pics from last night if anyone would like to take a look.

Congrats to your DS! I am likewise extremely impressed that not 1, not 2, but THREE members of the cadre came to represent!

I'm only getting a 1LT - hopefully the presentation will be as lovely as yours was

Hey, That's great that someone will be going. When is your awards ceremony? Are they coming from in-state?

ONLY a 1LT? Jeez I am sure the young kid I am presenting the check to next week will be sorely disappointed when he sees two lowly 2LTs handing the award to him.

You get to present Aglahad? Good for you. Hope it's a fun night and you get hoarse answering all those questions coming at you afterward.

Tuesday the 29th. Yes, he is from a local Bn. Wanted to get the cadre from PSU - but none were available then. I think half of them are gone on training, other half had other committments; oh well - getting it presented by someone, that's all that counts!

Yes; only a 1LT. Haha - guessing you aren't planning on letting said kid know an O-1 is presenting the scholarship? ... at least 2 LT's will kinda compensate

I am ready! (Oddly enough I few recruiting fairs have made me slightly hoarse from all of the talking) .

Even though the kid isn't attending my school I think it's a nice gesture by our batt and great PR since we will be in our blues. :thumb:

Personally, I think having an LT present the award means an awful too seeing as the young cadet could be in the exact same position 4 years down the road.

Definitely tell us how it goes!

I was thinking more from a parents perspective (... well at least my parents' perspective haha); in the sense that they would rather see someone older with a lot more time in present the scholarship. BUT, many ways of looking at this!
But, you also add another interesting perspective, I must say :thumb:

As the parent, we were happy to have anyone present it from the college. But was extremely impressed with who wanted to come and did come. I originally emailed the school for a document that my DS's school could present to him. I didn't know that they would send someone. We are overjoyed that those men have already taken such an interest in the new cadets. That says alot for the program they are running over there. We cannot be any more secure in our confidence that our DS will be guided on the right path.:wiggle:

Thompson, at this time everyone is so busy with end of the year activities. As a teacher, believe me when I say the paperwork is astronomical. So I could only imagine what these guys go through with recruiting, job fairs and other activities.

Congrats to you for receiving the scholarship. I'm sure the 1LT will do an excellent job representing the ROTC:thumb:

Keep in mind that this kid did not choose to attend my school, he just lives within proximity of our batt so it falls under our area of responsibility to present the award. If he was going to attend our school I am sure the XO or maybe even the PMS would have made a trip down.

Do you present to all students who fall in proximity of your battalion? or did they ask? How does that work?

We do if they ask. During the end of the year we are gearing up for LDAC support so many of the cadre are gone or busy. We get a list but don't usually seek them out unless they are attending our school.

In this case the student or school asked.

Two 2LTs? Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Gotta have one to supervise the other.

Get both of your ribbons on straight!

Yep - this was the exact same way with me; my area is out of PSU's jurisdiction. Mine gets sent to Dickinson College, which in turn, gets kicked down to Millersville (local Bn/cross town).

Too funny!

The other 2LT commissions next week and is only going because it is his old high school. He is a former reserve NCO so he has about 5-6 ribbons and I only have one so I don't think I can mess that one up :yllol:. No ASR yet...haha

I think it is awesome for him to go back to his high school to present the award. That really says a lot about his success. Kudos to him:thumb:

Surprise presentation!

Adding on to what the first poster said - so impressed! The school arranged it and it was a total surprise to both my son and us, his parents. A Captain came and did the presentation at the awards ceremony. I'm not sure where he came from, he left before I could thank him, but he was great. Our school is fairly new (6th graduating class) and this is a first. The awards ceremony is for all grades and I know there are several in the Jr./Soph. ranks that are pursuing ROTC or academy appointments. It's good to have this as a visible recognition for the underclassmen. Well done, Army!

Congrats on the presentation and the award!!!

It seems that the Army realizes the influence their presence has on high school ceremonies. It is such a great motivator for the younger siblings and other students at the school as well. Participation at the award ceremony is free advertisement for the Army in general and more specifically for their units. So awesome...:shake:

Great to hear about all the terrific awards ceremonies. You all are very fortunate, both my sons received AROTC Scholarships, unfortunately their high school does not have the level of appreciation for the military as some school such as yours.

No military award presentations are allowed at the school, Academy or ROTC, in fact military personell are not allowed to wear their uniforms on school grounds. Recruiters are allowed only to drop off pamphlets, they are not allowed to talk to students directly, and are not allowed to wear a uniform.

There have been arranged visits by some that are allowed to talk about SA's or ROTC but it is very controlled. All students wishing to attend any visit needs to have a signed permission slip from their parents. For every military display in the career center the school requires an equal display from organizations that advise against the military.

During graduation they give a program, in the program they have a page that lists scholarships, we had to argue with the school administration to get them to include his ROTC scholarship in the program. My son could care less at that point but it was more the principle of the thing for me.

During a school sponsered College fare off campus they required any Military to be in a back room under the stairs far away from the main room, and they were not allowed to walk around the main room in their uniform.

I think the biggest issue for me was when my son stpped by the high school to visit a couple old teachers after he graduated and commissioned, he had to check in with the office first, this is standard for everyone. The issue was that they knew he was in the military, even though he was not in uniform, he had to listen while they told him he was not allowed to say anything about being in the military while on school grounds. He decided to leave, met the teachers later for coffee.

It's nice to hear that other schools are not this restrictive and appreciate the military. You really want to get riled up, come to a Veterens Day assembly, One member of the military (No uniform) and at least 3 or 4 Anti-military speakers, there were always a few including my sons that would walk out of the assembly.

Good luck to all your son's and daughters, sounds like they had a great send off from their schools.

.....and thanks for letting me vent.
