Hi Y'all,

So I have been searching through forums and finding a lot of information about taking the hardest classes your school can offer and to continuously doing so. Here's my problem...

I had suffered a concussion earlier this year, my junior year. It left me out of school for 2 months. I was unable to take AP classes or many Honors Classes due to it because the doctors told me it would only make it worse. I had one Honors Class which was my English. My rank dropped from 21 to 38 this year and my GPA also suffered.

Course Selection for next year has opened and I have chosen the following classes: AP English, AP Calc, Honors Chemistry II and Honors Physics. Do the academies look at your Junior year grades more so than your Senior year grades? I have been trying to pick up the slack due to the concussion and have pulled my GPA up, as well as my rank to 28. I know I will be able to get better for next year, but my concern is getting completely overlooked due to my poor GPA due to my illness. Help please?

Short answer: Yes, the SA's not only look at at your junior year performance but they do so primarily (as does every other college) because you'll be submitting your application before senior grades are in. (You have started haven't you? If not better get cracking.) How did you do on the SAT? That might ease some concerns over your gpa.

You can use the essay to explain the challenges you've overcome. And perhaps you can suggest (politely) that your counsulor or English or math teachers discuss it in their letters.

The timing of my concussion forced me to take my SATs in March. This was my first major test that I had taken after my concussion. I had gotten a 1500, which for how much I had been out, wasn't bad. I am taking them again in June and possibly in September when I will also be taking ACTs.

I have started my application and I have written in the essay portion about the problem. I am just worried they will overlook me altogether.

The only sure way of being overlooked is to not apply. Don't worry - put that energy into improving your stats and showing them how awesome you are! Good luck!

Off topic, but I would post over on the DoDMERB thread the topic of your concussion. 2 months out of school due to a concussion might be red flags, i.e. remedial or DQ.

Agree. My 1/C ( - where did the years go? ) suffered a concussion jr year also but didn't miss nearly that much school. DOBMERB was very interested in her records indeed. It was not an issue once they reviewed the file.

Khaddy, I had a very, very severe concussion during my junior year and my class rank and GPA took huge hits. I recovered very well but for several months my life was a daze; it was a terrible head injury from a serious car accident. With hard work you can overcome it. If your concussion was that serious, I would recommend attaching a letter from your guidance counselor stating your circumstances. Otherwise keep working hard. I made the mistake of coming back to school way too early and stuck with AP classes when I shouldn't have. You need to set yourself up for success.

Also, is that a 1500/1600 or a 1500/2400 for your SAT? If its the latter, you really need to get those scores up.

Mooradian, it was out of 2400. I also had made the mistake of going back to school too early as well and that is why my first SAT score was so awful. I am trying really hard to get my grades up.

Is taking the SATs more than twice looked down upon?
