Does anyone know what watches are preferred by real Navy seals? Luminox claims to be the `official` but I have read some stuff that indicates that they are a farce. I am looking for a high school graduation present that will be both useful and mean something for a long time. Who knows, he may actually need it one day (as a seal).

I have a Luminox dive watch. Apparently they are the 'official' SEAL watch... It is very solid and great quality but was very expensive. I don't know the exact model off the top of my head, but it does have the trident emblazoned on the back.

From what I've read and seen, SEAL's usually weaar digital and durable watches that are easy to read and use quickly. G-shocks a pretty common from what I know. They're not real fancy or anything, but the point is that they're relatively cheap, durable and efficient.

I gave DS Luminox SEAL watch as a graduation gift last year. It was expensive and he loved it as it was cool looking, but one of the parts came off during the Plebe year and he bought G-shock. The shop fixed Luminox with no charge, but my DS prefers using G-shock as it does not break even you wear it during activities such as Sea Trials. I saw many Mids wearing G-shock.

Check out the Garmin watches. I see more and more people using these. Various models have GPS, heart rate monitors, can track running time, distance, elevation and can record swim distance, efficiency, stroke count, pool lengths, etc. Pretty cool.

I have a $20 Casio I bought from Target. It's simple, easy to use, and I won't cry if it gets smashed.

I'm not a big fan of Luminox. I have a Sport Watch (smaller than the SEAL watch), and have replace the retainer loops too many times. They are overpriced and trade on the SEAL name (like a lot of other products these days). For a graduation present, a classy dress watch is a good idea, and recommend a cheap Casio for daily wear at USNA. (Funny story, I bought an early model CASIO for about $20 my senior year in High School; my Dad gave me a hard time for wasting money on a piece of junk. I still have it, and with a new battery I am sure it would still work!)

I got a Luminox for graduating high school. In the first year, the clock mechanism broke twice, and I had to send it in each time to get repaired. Recently I wore it out on a FEX. I had worn the watch without taking it off for about two days when the plastic strap got torn in 3 places. It was a fairly cold weekend (lows of 35 at night) and I suspect the material of the watch didn't really handle it well. The next time I spend a significant amount of money on a watch, it won't be a Luminox.

Have had good luck with a Luminox myself (and have owned several of them over the years), but most of the folks you see on active duty wear the Casio G-Shock for all of the reasons listed above.
