I have a scholarship that I just received last semester for AFROTC to be a Combat Systems Officer. My question is, will the scholarship take away from my Federal Financial aid, or will the aid make up the difference on my bill? I know you can't "make money" off of this; that's not my intention. I just want to know if this will affect my federal aid that I'm receiving right now. I can't afford to go to school without it.

I expect the proper way to find an answer to this question is to contact the Bursars office. They will, or should, know.

If you want an opinion, they I would anticipate that the amount of Federal Financial Aid you receive would be reduced by the amount of your tuition. That is, you would "net" the same amount of aid when you include the scholarship. I'm assuming that your current aid exceeds your tuition in this.

A financial aid administrator may not award or disburse aid from a
campus-based program if that aid, when combined with all other
resources, would exceed the student’s need. If a student who has
already been awarded a financial aid package later receives additional
resources that cause his or her financial aid package to exceed his or
her need, the amount in excess of the student’s need is considered an
overaward.

I spoke to my cadre about this as well. They told me that the scholarship pays for whatever the financial aid doesn't. So if your college tuition is $10,000 and financial aid pays for $9,950 then the scholarship will pay $50

We have had this question many a times here.

ROTC scholarships are NOT considered financial aid for purposes of determining eligibility for federally funded aid including Pell Grants and Stafford Loans. In other words, your federal aid will NOT be reduced.

Your ROTC scholarship covers tuition. Your Pell Grants and Stafford Loans can be used to pay housing as long as they don't exceed the cost of housing as determined by the university. Stipend isn't even considered, since it is not disbursed by the university.

Institutional, need-based aid (from the college) will likely be decreased (or eliminated). This is money that comes from the university, not the federal government. Merit-based aid will depend upon whether it can be transferred to R&B and how much you can receive in addition to Pell Grant not to exceed the total cost of attendance (including R&B).

Good post goaliedad. I figured out how to add it to my favorites so I would have it at my fingertips.
