I thought I saw somewhere that there are special Army scholarships for undergrads majoring in desired languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, etc) and was wondering if anyone had info on this?

Is applying for these scholarships a separate process than the AROTC schoalrship, or would these majors be given preference?

If I were to get a BA in one of these languages, would my only career option be Intelligence? You wouldn't think they'd want to "waste" someone fluent in Chinese by having them as an Infantry officer.

Great, thanks for the links! I figured they would still send prospective interpreters or analysts to DLI.

"Language Requirements
The Army has no mandatory language requirement. However, Army leadership expects all Army officers to affiliate with a region of the world and pursue lifelong learning focusing on that region and a foreign language spoken in that region."

A career path ( Infantry > Logistics >Army Foreign Area Officer (FAO)).

When you start your inprocessing paper work, you will be asked a set of questions pertaining to any languages you can speak (conversational/fluent) and a preference of region which you might possibly like to be assigned to.

Quick note for Nick, if you ever have the chance to strike up a conversation with a FAO, do it. The ones I've run across so far are have been smart, experienced, and insightful mentors. Full of knowledge and always willing to lend a helping hand.

When is in processing? When a student begins ROTC or before commissioning. I am just curious since DS is nearly fluent in Spanish but plans to study Russian in college. His degree requires a geographic area of specialization too.

I'm pretty sure by in-processing he means before you commission.
