When do the assignments arrive?
What are the different traditions that the different companies have?

I can't answer your question about the company traditions, but I have read around these forums that most people received a letter about a week to a week and a half before I-Day tell them their company assignments. Some people didn't find out until I-Day.

Since the entire student body turns over every 4 years, there isn't really a lot of value in comparing what company X was like 3-5 years ago.

I asked TWO questions. Neither one was asking what the companies were like or comparing them.
I asked when (thanks for the response).
I asked traditions. For example, I know one company plays a croquet game against a local college. That company, I've read, does this every year. It's one of that company's traditions.

Are there any company's with other traditions like that?

6th Company does the Giving Tree every year at Christmas.
13th Company does the ball run for Army-Navy.
28th Company does the croquet game against St. Johns.
One of them paints Tecumseh every time; I forgot which.

Those are the big ones off the top of my head. Every company probably has its own little things or super secret special stuff.

All companies do a dining-in or dining-out, which has its own traditions in the military.

this may be out of date...

During the academic year, the brigade is organized into two regiments. Each regiment has three battalions and each battalion is comprised of 5 companies. The Plebes are divided according to their company/platoon assignments over Plebe Summer. If they were in Company K-Platoon19 (Kilo Company) over Plebe Summer, they usually join the upperclassmen of Company 19 in the fall. Likewise if they were in A2 they will probably go into 2nd Company after Reform. The letter designation is dropped entirely after Plebe Summer. There are 30 companies in all. Each company has their own style, traditions and regulations. One company always decorates Tecumseh for I-day. Company 28 has a traditional croquet game in the spring with St Johns College. Here are some of the company nicknames past and present:
1 Fun One
1st Company - Youngsters are responsible for getting the Herndon monument ready for the plebes to climb. They grease it up with lard and write humorous saying in the lard for all to see.
2 Deuce
3 Thirsty Three, Third Herd
4 Delta Dogs
5 Five Baby Five
6 Slacker Six, Motel 6
7 Seventh Heaven, Sweat 7 ("no sweat")
8 Eight Ball
9 Cloud 9
9th Company - responsible for painting Tecumseh in his motivational colors for all occasions
10 Tool Time Ten / Turkey Ten
11 Tiger Company
12 Twelfth Reich
13 Lucky 13
13th Company - runs the football to the Army Navy game. 13th Company from West Point does the same.
14 Killa Bees, Phat 14, Flamin' 14, Friendly 14, 14th Co Tomcats
15 ???
16 Sweet 16 (also told, "none")
17 Nacho 17
18 Anal 18, No Marine 18, Barely Legal 18
19 Free 19
20 Tropical 20 , Aloha Know at 2.0
21 No Fun 21, Blackjack 21
22 Loose Loose, Double Deuce
23 Rock Hard 23 (unofficially, Predators)
24 Hard Core 24
25 Wu-Five, 25 Alive, Built to Survive 25
26 26 All Stars (also told, "none") 26th Civilian
27 Gamecocks (also, Fighting Gamecocks) The Herd
28 The Club, Fightin' 28
28th Company - Firsties are invited to play in the croquet match with St John's College. Mids wear their white uniforms, short blue jackets, look sharper than sharp. Townswomen come on 19th century long dresses, with parasols, and men in bowler hats and striped jackets. Picnics on the grass. Johnnies wear anything and everything.
29 29 Palms (unofficially, "War Pigs") Stand in Line 29
30 Dirty Thirty

At the end of Plebe year there is often a scrambling of Plebes to new companies. This process is referred to as

Shuffling: Moving the Plebes together from one company to another company. This keeps groups of Plebes together and moves them into a new set of upperclassmen. It can be helpful to returning Youngesters (Plebes-No-Mores) not to have to join the ranks of those who tormented them through Plebe year.

Shotgunning: Mixing the Plebes up among all the companies. With this scenario Plebes get a whole new group of company mates. They get scattered throughout the brigade irrespective of which company they came from.

Most years Plebes get shotgunned or shuffled. Occasionally Plebes stay with their original company into the following fall but usually they get moved around. Sometimes other years get moved as well.

I was answering your second question. In the past 'traditions' has also meant what is the reputation of that company.

Some of the info in Vista's post is really out of date (silly parents network...), some is accurate enough.
OP: The best traditions (by company or otherwise) are ones you won't read about online. Let's leave it at that.

But, question for the newer mids:

The above was a huge looming threat for us while I was at USNA, as was a rumored rescrambling to 36 companies, which led to (predictably) some ugly Lord of the Flies style classwide meetings in most companies to determine who would leave.

Has that been completely shelved, or are they still kicking that idea around?

Nope, haven't heard about it.

Here's a list of company mascots. Subject to change. Leniency/strictness seriously depends on the current CO/SEL and the current 1/C and 2/C in company.

1: Shipmates
2: Honey Badgers
3: Third Herd
4: Four Horsemen
5:
6: Jackalopes
7: Mustangs
8:
9: Pirates
10: Titans
11: Tigers
12:
13: Lucky 13
14:
15: Feisty Goats
16: Centurions
17: Jabbersaurs
18: Yard Dogs
19: Free 19
20: Roaring Twenty
21: Blackjacks
22: Spartans
23: Fighting Hellfish
24: Rockstars
25: Bearsharks
26: Rough Riders
27: Praetorians
28: The Club
29: 29 Palms
30: Dirty Thirty

Based on outdated company websites and stuff I've seen, but still a bit more recent than the list above. Dunno the ones for 5, 8, 12, and 14.

I stayed with 12th Company in April for the CVW. I'm fairly certain they're the Wolves.

You can say that again...I think it is at least a decade old.

I think the 36 companies thing fell through the roof when money became an issue.

5th company

5th Company is responsible for the cannoneers. Those who fire the saluting battery during parades at Worden field also at the football games. Great uniform coat as well.

Also their mascot was Ben Grim the thing from fantastic four

sorry for the old data

I did put in my title that it was probably outdated :) (just like me!)

Company names/mascots

Google search on "COMDTMIDNINST 6100.2A" to get the Brigade Intramural Sports Program Instruction from January of this year.

Page 12 of the pdf has the bracket with all of the (official?) company names.

I can imagine that there are informal other names, though.

Here is the link to see the Company logo.
I only know about Company 29 and their current mascot is "Flying Squirrels"
and not 29 Palms.
You can download the logo and I am planning on using it when making a memory book for the Plebe year. I better start working on it. The Plebe year went so fast!

I think that these are a bit outdated (Text at the top of the linked images says "current as of 2006," and I know of a few others besides 29 that are now different).

They don't wear the patch on the Ike. It messes up the jacket when they graduate and remove the patch after commissioning. Big circle where the patch used to be.

I know that 30th is always on the field to applaud the football team as they enter the field.

That is news to me....current MIDN, isn't it still a Battalion rotation?

Is there still no J (Juliet) Company during Plebe Summer? - Meaning that 19 & 20 belong to K (Kilo) Company?
