Security at USNA

In what way?

I have visited regularly and found it to be very good. Perfect? No. But... I think parents with proper ID should be allowed to drive onto the yard. They are not except during special times and only with special paperwork.

I have mixed emotions about it though, I want safety for everyone there, but still want freedom to come & go. Parking is also a big issue at USNA.

You can walk right in with proper ID, and your bags will be searched.

Other than what is published on the USNA website about security, specifics should not be discussed here.

Don't show up with the Coast Guard ID of they give you an extra long look...

I understand, just looking for some reassurance that a plan is in place. Maplerock's reply was what I was hoping to hear.

So you are unnerved enough to actually have concerns about a "plan", but you are also comforted by the assurances of an anonymous poster on a random website's comment thread?

I've never been there and wanted to get an idea of what it's like to get through the gate and get access to the yard. I know it's open to public and I was not sure how they screen visitors. By the way this website is not random to me but, you are an anonymous poster also so should everyone disregard your comments?

If you're asking about what visitors need to do to get onto the USNA grounds . . . all you need to know is here. It's at usna.edu under "Visit USNA."

If you're asking about how USNA provides security for mids and others on the Yard, agree with USNABGO08 that the subject is not really the best topic for this forum.

If you are the parent of a MIDN you will be issued or can request an ID card that allows you to drive onto campus most anytime- there are some exceptions. I believe sponsors can also get cards. It comes in handy when picking up or dropping off MIDs especially when they are moving stuff.

Yes. You should absolutely disregard my comments. But if you aren't comfortable disregarding my comments, you should at least be very skeptical about what I say.

Suffice to say they are not secure installations, and anyone who wants to enter may do so. This is not a secret.

Like CGA.... unless you're a cadet, in uniform, without a military I.D..... even if you have your drivers license, the guard has seen you 1,000,000 times and knows your name... you shall not pass. (and if that doesn't make sense to you, it certainly never did to me, as a cadet).

Civilians are allowed on the Yard for tours and whatever with valid photo I.D. (driver's license or passport). Everyone must have an I.D., including returning mids in uniform.

Bancroft Hall is secured with CAC card readers at every entrance to living spaces. The Rotunda, Memorial Hall, and just about all other buildings are open to the public.

Not as strict as USAFA and USMA, but USNA is much more of a tourist destination than any of the service academies. There's people walking around campus on historical tours and whatnot all the time, Chinese tourists taking pictures everywhere, little kids doing swimming programs in MacD, high schoolers doing Mini-Stem and sports camps, etc.

I find it interesting that you have to present an ID when you walk onto campus but not if you are a passenger in a car. I have driven onto campus many times with a car full of people and never once has anyone other than myself (the driver) been asked for ID.

Our recent experience has been that everyone in a vehicle has to show an ID, maybe practices were different a few years ago.

I am not sure what exactly the original post is asking. From other posts appears to be the parent of a future mid. Are you asking as a parent what sort of ID you will need to provide or do you have some other concern?

I agree with other posters that speculating about security measures or asking our opinion on this topic is not an appropriate forum discussion.

I have driven on campus probably 30 to 40 times in the last two years. The three times I drove on in the last two weeks I had 4 MIDs in uniform one time, two MIDs not in uniform another time and the third time two family members and a MID. No IDs asked for other than mine. I enter thru gate 8 and not gate 1 if that makes any difference. Maybe I'm just special:smile:

Nothing presented hear is new or classified. It's not sensitive. The directions about security are posted on signs when entering most military (or federal) installations.

You have to show a photo I.D. Not breaking news.

Don't bring weapons or explosives on base. Not breaking news.

You can be search at any time for any reason. Not breaking news.

I'm sure there's much more stuff out there that can be collected through open source documents. Information about how security responds to certain threats is NOT shared. Tactics and numbers are NOT shared. I'm guessing all that "Force Protection" info is whatever the Navy wants to call LE Sensitive.

But this stuff, the "what should I know" questions are fine. It probably even helps the process.

Not trying to be an as#, but I guarantee you, its much, much safer than any school they previously attended.

I'd be more worried about pirates from the Chesapeake (if you get my drift):shake:

YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I was much more nervous when my kids were prowling around our hometown while on leave or vacation than I ever was when they were on the yard.
