Curious as to how the first week of NASS went...and if those who participated have any tips on packing, traveling, etc.?

It was a great time, we drove down and I got in around 1. To be honest, I didn't use civilian clothes once, everything you need is issued to you (unless you want to wear civvies on the ride home). I would say bring extra towels, undergarments, and shoes; those seemed to be the most important while I was there. Otherwise, just try to have a good time and it'll go fine :thumb:.

Ditto to what SuaSponte said. The week was fantastic. The pool was closed while we were there, so swimming trunks were unnecessary. Also, learn your rates early, it will ease a lot of the pressure before Indoc.

I actually thought Indoc was a lot of fun. I was right most of the time and doing pushups was a relief if I got something wrong. I got railed with about a minute to go for not keeping bearing though, as soon as it was over everybody was all smiles. Some kids barely got asked anything though, I felt bad (what's the fun if you don't get in some pt?). Sea Trials were a good time too, some stations were harder than others but it was a great experience.

I wouldn't worry about anything while you're there; if you focus on having a doing your best and being a positive member of your squad then you'll have a blast.

What company were you?

My DS absolutely loved it! Every minute. He said the sessions were very informative (can't remember what he called them) seeing the wind tunnels, the boats, the seamanship stuff. He knows a lot more about the navy as well, not just the academy, so that was great. He loved his midshipman leadership, he said they were very fair and easy to talk to. He said it was cool toward the end of the week, as everyone settled in, he could really see the easy camraderie amongst the MIDS and how well they knew each other and worked so well together.
Take a little bottle of tide for washing in the sink (he said only one PT shirt) and hangers for drying. Bags for sandy clothes. Plenty of socks and underwear, no need for civvies except for the trip home. Didn't need spending money other than in the airport.
He also had a good time at the airport, after everyone went their separate ways to check bags, etc, a big group of them found each other and all had dinner while waiting for their flights. He said this was great to get each other's opinions and thoughts about the week.

wondering if any parents from Session 1 attended the closing NASS ceremony?

I am traveling to pick my son up and attend the final day parents program, and I was just wondering what it consisted of.

Thanks,

Clothes!

Okay...I have a daughter who will likely over pack. So, they do NOT where civilian clothes on any outings? Wait...actually...do they go on outings? I thought someone told me something about DC, but that could be wrong. Are two pairs of sneakers enough? Also, when flying in do they just roam the baggage claim in search of midshipmen? Any help is appreciated!!!

Stella,
DS says they went to DC but wore the NASS clothes (each company wears a different color tshirt each day). He packed athletic shorts and a couple t's just in case and didn't touch any of it, just clothes to wear home. 2 pairs of sneakers were perfect.
He said the MIDS are impossible to miss...bright white uniforms and they had signs. Also they only had a couple busses going back and forth to the academy so there were a ton of kids in a mass gaggle just hanging out. They also had box lunches (provided) since they were there awhile.
This was the first time he flew alone and I was mildly freaking out about someone stealing him
He said it was all very well organized and you couldn't miss the group. And as I said, they even all found each other on the other side of security on the way home. He had a 6:00 flight so he had quite a wait (dropped them at the airport around noon), but they sat together and ate and then even had a few on his flight.

The candidates were overly motivated! They woke me up (I live in 7th wing right now) when they ran outside to PEP every morning and ensured I did not miss my morning quarters formation for summer school.

On the serious note, there is really no need to pack 5 pairs of clothing. They will give you shirts and shorts as your uniform. Do bring lots of socks and compression shorts.

From my experience at NASS in 2011, it was good to have two pairs of sneakers, since one pair will be soaked after Sea Trials, and it's nice to have a dry pair to change in to at the end of the day.

Waking an hour early to the sound of "...left, left, lefty-right leeefffft..."

Thanks, Prospective '18. I bet you guys will be awesome at chow calls.
