I am joining ROTC as a sophomore this up coming fall and I am planning on contracting with them. I am an education major and as I was planning out my academic future schedule I realized that I will be a super-senior whether I like it or not. I will be done taking college classes the spring of my senior year but then I have to wait until the next fall because I have to student teach in order to graduate from my college. I will have finished the ROTC classes by this time. What does the ROTC do with "super" seniors?

This is a question best answered by your cadre.

But to give you an idea, many degrees that require more than 4 years to complete at a school (usually engineering or similar) are automatically granted extra time to complete. I would say that as long as you are given university credit for your student teaching, the term should be covered.

Once again, this is best answered by your cadre.

I will also be a super senior for ROTC. I'm in AFROTC, so I don't know if this applies to you (If you're a different branch). After completing the AFROTC classes, on my 5th year of college I will not be taking anymore classes, however, I will still have to attend LLAB and PT sessions.

So I will just commission when my five year comes to a close? They won't kick me out right?

As long as you submit a 104R. They have to be able to plan when you will graduate. It's not a big deal, usually (for AROTC) you aren't required to do any training because your main job then would be to finish your degree. The only MS5's I've seen that we're required to do anything were required to attend PT because they were struggling, and they usually just PT'd with the MS3's.

1. agree, ask your Cadre

2. Agree with Bull -- don't know if the ROTC will just make sure you're still alive during your 9th semester, or whether you still get subsistence allowance, tuition and books (if necessary). I suspect the "just make sure they're still alive" route.

I am student teaching. I will be taking 14 credits that semester but not actually be on campus. I will most like be at a local high school or middle school every week day student teaching. I will do that for a semester and then graduate in December with my degree in Geography Education B.S. I won't need books or other costs since it isn't traditional student to professor learning. It is a hands on experience learning instead.

I would like to participate on weekend patrols (they are on weekends at my school) and morning PT sessions.

I've noticed a lot, on the AROTC side, that a lot has to do with how much funding the Bn has. Is it safe to assume, possible extension of funds beyond the normal/traditional 4 years, is based up how big the Bn is, therefore having more funding available?

At my Bn (PSU), I'm authorized 4.5 years; cadre said Bn would pick up tuition for that .5 years. Wasn't sure if that is because of previously mentioned theory.

I am not worried so much about the funding (I'm a non-scholarship cadet). I am just worried that they will kick me out of ROTC, or not contract me, or not commission me or I won't get AD/job I want because of my 4.5 year plan.

Also nothing is concrete..stuff changes (not being able to get into classes..ect..basically any stuff that can happen unseen). For example, if I wrote on the 104R form that I was planning on being in school for 4.5 years but then something happened and I had to do 5 years. How do they go about that?

If your scholarship is approved for more than 4 years, you will get paid. If you end up needing more semesters than what your scholarship covers, it's on you.

Scholarships get extended for majors that need more semesters to complete (Engineering, nursing, etc.), not for majors who want more semesters to complete.

Good luck with the weekend patrols. My unit wouldn't allow that unless the MS instructor wanted to use you in a TA role, which is already covered. By that time, your fun has come and gone, your job then is to lock up the degree.

I still can get AD right on commission? The extra semester won't hinder that?

First off...TALK TO YOUR BATTALION...if you were coming to the Golden Knight Battalion I might put you in MS I class in the fall to get you up to speed. You will probably go to LTC next summer. When you don't graduate on time you will be what we call a completion Cadet. In our Battalion we have about 5 of those hanging around. It's not the desired status, but it won't hurt you unless we don't know about it, or anticipate it. Letting your cadre know your plan, having an accurate 104r, and not sliding anymore than necessary are the keys. You will access with the year group you will fall into when you graduate, so there is no reason you won't be competing for AD if you want it.

This is what is going down.

In the Fall I am taking MS 101 and MS 201 and then in the Spring I am taking MS102 and MS202. I am not eligible for LTC then because I have completed my Basic Training classes. I have made it my intention to contract already with him even though I will be a non-scholarship cadet. I am hoping/planning on contracting in the spring. From what I have read on my school's ROTC website is that you fill out the 104R when you contract not before. Would this be correct? If so, I can let them know about my 4.5 year plan then when I contract and fill out the 104R form.

You aren't going to contract till you complete the basic course (100 and 200 level classes or attend LTC), so end of Spring semester or the following fall will be your contract date. Here at Clarkson we make everyone prepare a 104r. I'm not going to contract anyone until I see that they are academically aligned and I know what year group to put them in. Since you have talked your situation out with your cadre and the ROO knows exactly what your situation is, you have nothing to worry about (since hoping and reading things on websites aren't good things to rely on).

Not every Battalion does everything the same way. I would be avoiding doubling up the classes if possible and sending you to LTC. Hopefully doubling up the ROTC classes is not the reason you will graduate a semester late. If you drop the MS 2 classes, add a regular class towards your degree and pick up a couple winterim or summer classes you might be able to graduate on time (which your 104r would show you, if you filled one out). Not trying to burst your bubble. Just trying to share some experience.
As I said before, there is nothing wrong with being a completion Cadet if it's part of the plan.

It was the way he told me to go so I am just doing what he told me to. No, doubling up isn't holding me back. I switched my major and that is what got me. Actually attending LTC in the summer would hold me back more since there are two classes that are only open over the summer at my school that I need to take that summer.

I plan on meeting with him at the beginning of the semester to let him know my situation (ask him about the 104R forms and my 4.5 year plan) and to let him know I am looking to contract.
