All of you are right on being the best you can be. I am not saying "what is the minimum I can do to pass", I am saying I NEED to pass and this is some of the stuff that I can do RIGHT NOW. I run every single day, I do pushups between days when I do bench lifts, and I do pull-ups every other day. I am actively working on every single area of myself for USMA. Don't take me the wrong way. I know what west point involves, and I have one of the strongest desires out there to attend.
Keep working and fighting to improve.... I know you won't get discouraged, just wanted to be candid about why the CFA is more than pass-fail. This probably comes up monthly so don't take it personally.
If you translate the pushup, situp, and 1 mile CFA results you mentioned to an APFT score you'll see the issue. It's not 1:1, as you'll probably do a hair better on pushups/situps as it's fewer events, yet it's a 2 mile run instead of one. So it often very close.
But let's assume you could run 2 miles at your one mile pace.... you would not pass the APFT due to running with an 8 minute pace. Situps were decent, and pushups just OK. just a few pushups not counted and that would not be passing either.
Improve the running a bit to pass the APFT, which would be a 15:54 two mile run, everything else stayed the same. Your APFT score would be a 229. That's probably a D on the USMA grading scale (was as of a couple years ago, anyway)
While technically a pass, depending on policy at the time, you'd probably be in zone of concern and be on a plan to improve, etc. You really don't want to start your career at USMA that way!!! And the APFT will be part of your life for the next 9 years or more!
Past years there were some exceptions for certain corps squad athletes and they were allowed alternate testing. So if you are a recruited lineman things may be different. Likewise, these are for males under 21.
So keep at it and don't get discouraged. I'd try to get some help with the running and keep working the pushups. I'm assuming you are applying for class of 2018, so you at least have the summer to improve.
I'd also start a dialog with your field force rep if you can. They have far more current information and can better discuss your specific situation.
