Will I pass?

BB throw: 84'
shuttle: 8.5
pushups: 50
pullups: 4
situps: 77
Mile: 8:00

Also, does anybody know the scoring system of the CFA? I keep hearing stuff about 250+ points and what not...

Take a look at the average scores from the previous years. You should look to do above the average or try to achieve the maximum scores. Assuming you're a male, I'd look to increase your pushups, situps, pullups, and decrease your mile time. Your shuttle and BB throw scores are solid imo :thumb:

Definitely work on all events until they're at LEAST at the averages, and I'm pretty sure the mile time is roughly 15 seconds slower than the minimum. Good luck!

son took the CFA Last yr at SLE. On June 8th he received the following email:

Candidate xxxxx, your Summer Leaders Seminar Candidate Fitness Assessment Results are as follows: (asteriks indicates event that is at risk)

CFA DATE: 6/2/2012
PUSHUPS: 75
PULLUPS: 18
FLEX ARM HANG: 0.0
1-MILE RUN: 6.26
SHUTTLE RUN: 9.0
BASKETBALL THROW: 62
CRUNCHES: 95

CFA SCORE: 672

His scores were far better at NASS though (5:40 mile, 66 BB, 8.8 shuttle) so he emailed USNA and asked them to send his NASS scores to USMA.

Also if you spend some time really looking through this forum (though the time would be far better spent really running) they do have alot of stats on this forum that showed averages and someone guesstimated minimums based on a bunch of people submitting scores and results. Im not sure that info has any value though.

Wow, great job on the CFA.

I am training every day. Today I reevaluated my sit-ups and got 86. I am worried about my mile time definitely. Also, my pull-ups and pushups are a concern. I will do anything to pass all areas of the test though. I work every single day towards making everything better.

does your school have an xcoutry or track coach?
My son's original time was almost two minutes slower. He met with the schools form coach ( we come from a HUGE xcountry school) who worked with him.

So with the WCS being out of 8000 and the CFA is 10% I assume 672 is out of 800 points? Good score!

My school does NOT have a track nor a xcountry team. I have been training in my neighborhood. I drove a mile in my truck to get the distance down right. Any suggestions for places I could go?

local college with a track or xcountry team? local running club? high end running shoe store will have experts as well...

Honestly there are so many adults out there willing to help teenagers and young adults with a plan, especially if that plan is to serve your country.

My son struggled on the Reading section of the ACT and then asked an adult to help and together they raised his reading score alone from a 21 to a 33.

He was running over a 7:00 mile and worked with a form coach to end with a 5:40 mile.

He got tips and suggestions on how to write a resume.

There are experts all around you who want to help you if you just look around.

I am worried my ACT isn't good enough. I got a 28 with 26-27 on everything except for english with a 31. Writing was an 8. I have already taken a $1000 course with appleton to get that score. Any thoughts on if this will be a problem or what?

Yes you will pass the CFA, though barely on some events. Pull-ups and run time and pushups could all be higher. And in regards to your ACT score, with a 30 being around average and with math being one of the most important scores, I would say definitely take it again or try SAT since West Point superscores. A 28 will need much better recommendation letters and leadership shown in extra curricular activities in order to prove oneself. Try to go to Boy's State if you can.

Will I pass?

Really only USMA can answer that, and they'll just say if you are at risk or not.

You've received several answers to this question, but there is one to ask yourself: Is this is the best you can do? Are you willing to to stop fighting for more points?

Just recognize that some of your key CFA scores are right at or below average (running, situps, pushups). And those averages include candidates recruited for other reasons. IE: If you are are not recruited you can't count on an average score.

But the real concern I see is how you would do at USMA... it's not a 1:1 correlation, but we've seen multiple cadets with just average scores on those CFA items go on to struggle with the APFT.

You'll take the APFT for score twice a year. And again before MIAD's, etc. "Passing" scores translate to either a C- or C. Not passing keeps you out of "good standing", and impacts leave, summer training, etc. IE; You don't want to go there.

Running is harder to improve, but many candidates can max the CFA situps & pushups with a regular training program in a few weeks. And be well prepared for CBT, the APFT, etc.

You have a very good start... don't you want to maximize your chances for appointment? :thumb:

All of you are right on being the best you can be. I am not saying "what is the minimum I can do to pass", I am saying I NEED to pass and this is some of the stuff that I can do RIGHT NOW. I run every single day, I do pushups between days when I do bench lifts, and I do pull-ups every other day. I am actively working on every single area of myself for USMA. Don't take me the wrong way. I know what west point involves, and I have one of the strongest desires out there to attend. My father is military, his father was military, and his father's father was military. No my scores might not be great, and my CFA performance might be a little below average, however, I am working to max out everything to the best of my ability. @eaglescout, I will have some of the best letters of recommendation from the people submitting them simply because of who I am and how I have acted in the classroom and in the community. I'm not trying to sound cocky, but the people who will submit those letters love me and are really pushing for me to attend USMA. I am close with my teachers and the administrators of my school so that might be a big plus for me. BTW I did get a 28 on math. not that the extra point matters but I made an error above. All of that being said, when I viewed the class profiles, the majority of ACT scores were in the range that I was in... so I am really hoping that maybe that will keep me safe. I just took the ACT for the fourth time a week or two ago and I will probably retake in September or whenever because my dad is always pushing me to do better.

Keep working and fighting to improve.... I know you won't get discouraged, just wanted to be candid about why the CFA is more than pass-fail. This probably comes up monthly so don't take it personally.

If you translate the pushup, situp, and 1 mile CFA results you mentioned to an APFT score you'll see the issue. It's not 1:1, as you'll probably do a hair better on pushups/situps as it's fewer events, yet it's a 2 mile run instead of one. So it often very close.

But let's assume you could run 2 miles at your one mile pace.... you would not pass the APFT due to running with an 8 minute pace. Situps were decent, and pushups just OK. just a few pushups not counted and that would not be passing either.

Improve the running a bit to pass the APFT, which would be a 15:54 two mile run, everything else stayed the same. Your APFT score would be a 229. That's probably a D on the USMA grading scale (was as of a couple years ago, anyway)

While technically a pass, depending on policy at the time, you'd probably be in zone of concern and be on a plan to improve, etc. You really don't want to start your career at USMA that way!!! And the APFT will be part of your life for the next 9 years or more!

Past years there were some exceptions for certain corps squad athletes and they were allowed alternate testing. So if you are a recruited lineman things may be different. Likewise, these are for males under 21.

So keep at it and don't get discouraged. I'd try to get some help with the running and keep working the pushups. I'm assuming you are applying for class of 2018, so you at least have the summer to improve.

I'd also start a dialog with your field force rep if you can. They have far more current information and can better discuss your specific situation.

My USNA CFA scores

I took my first CFA today. I plan to take it again, but would like to know if my scores are passing now. I am a male

They Are:

Bball: 75ft
Pull ups: 7
Shuttle Run: 9.0 sec
Crunches: 65
Push-ups: 37
1 Mile run: 6:45

Thanks!

I think you're close, but you REALLY should work on getting push-ups and sit-ups (at the least) over average, which is 54 and 75 or so respectively. I also think it's a bit worrisome that the BBall throw is your only over-average event. To pass, you're fine on pull-ups, the run, and the shuttle run, but push-ups and sit-ups are too low to tell. Also, if you plan on applying to USAFA, the average scores are a lot higher than USMA's, so keep that in mind (83 sit-ups, 63 push-ups, 12 pull-ups).

Personally, I'm getting up 5:15 tomorrow SLE style to continue to make my CFA better. I've maxed push-ups and sit-ups already, with the mile as my only sub-average event, and I'm not planning on resting on that. Every point in your WCS counts, so keep at it, get in that extra push-up or pull-up, it could be the difference!

Won't rehash the earlier discussion... but a couple of inputs:

1) Is this the best you can do? You will be leaving points on the table even if this was passing

2) You would fail the APFT with that pushup score. And most likely be a very miserable puppy in CBT

Think beyond "getting in", you'll want to be ready to do well once there! :thumb:

Situps are decent, and running appears very good, btw!
