I'm a rising junior. I've already contacted my ALO earlier this year. Is there any reason to contact her again before junior year or applying to SS? Just wanted to make sure I'm doing every right/possible before the craziness of the application and junior start. Any thoughts? Thank you for your time!

You can actually apply for summer seminar on your own. There's a website that will open up sometime in December. You go to the website and apply.

Then, your ALO will be notified of you, because s/he will want to do a basic interview with you. Usually just over the phone. Then, the academy looks at your application and compares it to the others nationally and decides whether to give you a summer seminar spot or not. So, your ALO is going to contact you around December'ish anyway. But of course, there's nothing wrong with shooting them an email around November and say: "Hey there, remember me? Just wanted to let you know I'm still interested in the academy and am applying to summer seminar in a couple weeks. Please let me know if there's anything I should know about". (Or something along those lines).

Best of luck to you. Mike....

FYI...in our daughter's case, she did not hear from her ALO at all until after she was accepted to the summer seminar. A few weeks after getting her acceptance, he sent her an email congratulating her and introducing himself. He told her to be in touch if she had any questions about summer seminar and said that he would get in touch with her again after she returned from it. One more time, at the start of summer, he sent her another quick email encouraging her and telling her to have fun at the seminar, ask whatever questions she had and contact him anytime if she needed to before or while there with any issues.

So, if you don't hear from your ALO or he or she does not interview you before the summer seminar application process is over, it may not impact your seminar selection at all.

I suppose there are just different ways ALOs operates. She is looking forward to meeting hers upon return from summer seminar!

Mike: If one thought the interview could help their summer seminar selection process, could they request an ALO interview? (Thinking of our son whose paper stats are not as strong as his sister's, but who would show a lot of long term interest, passion and drive for summer seminar in an interview)

Stella. When did your daughter go to summer seminar. The "INTERVIEW" thing for summer seminar is fairly new. Last year's summer seminar was the first time we did them. And the interview is recommended but also up to the academy's discretion. Like I said, we did them by telephone. Not in person.

You can't really request one. The ALO's are recommended to do them. If they do; great. If they don't; it's not going to hurt. But there are so many individuals applying for summer seminar; and because all of the information is "SELF REPORTED", the academy was realizing that they were getting quite a few summer seminar applicants who probably shouldn't be there. (Or even applying to the academy). So they were hoping the ALO's could sort of pre-screen some of the applicants. The ALO's don't decide no, but they make a recommendation to the academy.

P.S. I noticed you said she is doing Summer seminar now; so that means she applied this past december. Her ALO was probably swamped with a lot of applicants or with work and couldn't get around to it. Like i said, it's suggested and recommended, but it's not mandatory.
