Word of Caution: 2 is not enough late at night in sketchy areas

I got a disturbing report from DD. Two of her Project GO classmates were robbed at knifepoint on Saturday night. No injuries, just loss of stuff.

While we may think that being paired in twos is sufficient deterrence, it certainly is not. Think about it... two cadets, unarmed, presented with a knife. There is no adequate defense other than running away, if possible, or giving up anything the assailant wants.

I suggest we all warn those we know at CULP, ProjectGO, or any other assignment, to go in groups of four minimum if going out late at night, in unfamiliar surroundings.

Sorry to hear this. I hope they only made off with the cash although I wish they hadn't made off with anything. Hope she isn't doing her project GO stuff here in Raleigh. In any case I agree with your suggestion. The more the safer... and merrier as well.

But one LITS, legally carrying his concealed .38 spl is an adequate defense.

Not a bad defense, but I don't think you'ld be able to carry that gun where these cadets are. I'm assuming they are out of the country.

I remember my son saying they got some ominus looks when they were in the Serbian section of Bosnia, walking in groups of 4 or more helped I'm sure.

Glad to hear the cadets came out of the situation in one piece.

One of my favorite professor stories from CGA. The professor is still there, a captain.

As the story goes:

When this professor was either a cadet or very junior officer he and some fellow cadets (or junior officers) were walking through a city. They found themselves in a very nasty part of town (probably near a ship yard).

The professor had to stop at a light or was at least slowed in some way, maybe talking to someone or distracted. He was probably a block back from the rest of the group (of two or three officers or cadets).

As he started to close his distance he saw that the group of shipmates ahead of him were being held up (I believe at gun point, but I don't know anymore). Without giving it a second thought he began sprinting at the group yelling "STOP STOP, FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT! STOP NOW!"

Of course, the criminals ran off, they generally don't wait to see if you're telling the truth.

Always loved that story.

Probably not authorized by the host country or the military to carry. Also depends on the age of the cadets. If you are a junior or even senior even here in the US then you may still not be 21, which is the legal age in most states. Then you have some states that think law abiding students should not be able to carry on college campuses and only criminals should be able to Reminds me of military installations . . .

I thought most states you can open carry at 18; in PA we can open carry at 18, conceal carry at 21. Interestingly enough, I believe it is 5 state schools here are conducting trials of uplifting bans on guns on campus - but it's pointless because you can't carry inside any university building - so basically only in your car/on your person outside ...
