Our DS's favorite restaurant is up in Pasadena MD. Question #1. Are the Plebes allowed to go to Pasadena on PPW? 2. How long does it take to get from Pasadena back to the USNA? 3. Is that area a "Good part of town?"

Thanks!

It's within the 22 miles radius so yes. Google maps says 20 minutes but I'd give it AT LEAST twice that. You don't wanna cut it close and don't even come near being late. Don't know what you mean by good part of town.

Pasadena is a small bedroom community along Maryland Route 2 between Annapolis and Baltimore. Typical strip malls, chains, etc., along the way. Head over the Naval Academy bridge and just keep heading north on Rte. 2, and you will be there in about 15 minutes.

Keep in mind that your mid may have different ideas of what to do over PPW -- like hang out in a hotel, sleep, order room service, use electronic devices, etc.

Not saying your DS wouldn't want to visit a favorite restaurant but consider you'll have 4 yrs of weekends to do that -- be attuned to what he wants to do THIS weekend. Parents are typically excited to do this and that in the Yard and in town -- plebes maybe not so much.

It's within the 22 miles radius

Note: Midregs now restricts plebes to the tri-city area (Baltimore, Washington, Annapolis area) vice the 22 mile radius. The 22 mile radius is no longer a thing. Leaving this area is possible for plebes if they submit a special request and ORM chit to the company officer.

So is Pasadena ok or not ok? Will our DS be perfectly clear on where he can/can't go when we pick him up at PPW?

Pasadena is located between Annapolis and Baltimore so you are fine. I don’t know if they give the Plebes a mile radius anymore - it was 22, then I believe 30 and now just the tri-city area so pretty much anything within a 45 minuet non-rush hour drive is with-in range. I suspect he will be told how far he can travel. Good luck and have fun!

we didn't know the plebes had to stay in bancroft over night until the parents weekend schedule was just posted this weekend- did you know sooner? Disappointed because we are renting a house but it's within about 15 mins of Academy so that's good

To my knowledge, plebes have never got overnights during PPW. Nonetheless, your plebe will still enjoy having detailer-free space. If it's within your means, and your plebe asks, invite parentless plebes along for liberty.

To my knowledge, plebes have never got overnights during PPW.

Class of 2008 had a weekend...it actually was surprise because the water main broke on the Friday afternoon...so USNA Administration made the call to give all the plebes a weekend. Then I think the next few classes got weekends (I believe) out of precedence, but then it was rescinded at some point.

^^^ My recollection also about the watermain/maintenance issue. Schedules CAN change from year to year which is why we continually recommend to new participants that past practice should only be used as a general guideline. There are several reasons that things may change, just the way it is.

We also rented but knew that plebe would have to be back each night, Open house during the day for any that needed a place to eat, crash ,watch movies , help with the grill or call home. We were within walking distance of gate one. If you are fifteen minutes driving from main gate give yourself an hour. Traffic is unbelievable and you will see plebes bailing out of cars to make it back.

Because of weekend beach traffic, you need to be mindful of clobbered roads to and from the eastern shore... it probably would be wise not to get to far from Annapolis on Sunday so your plebe doesn't get stranded beyond walking/running distance of the Yard. There's not much tolerance for missing expiration of liberty, as I recall.

Agree with the above. I expect most of you will be very surprised at HOW conscious of time/deadlines your DS/DD has become. Most will start getting antsy several hours before they are due back.

Even if YOU'RE sure you can make it back on time, want a few extra hours/minutes with your child, etc., respect his/her concerns and desires to make it back to Mother B with time to spare.

Totally agree with being in walking distance by 1600 Sunday (assuming they have to be back at 1800). You can always sit in the dock area and eat, talk, etc. Those of you staying in a downtown hotel are fine, which is why these go for a premium during parents' weekends.

And '64 is correct -- beach traffic (Rte 50 is basically the only way back from Ocean City, Rehobeth, etc.) can be brutal on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening!

During PPW, if the Plebes want to go swimming in the hotel pool, do they need to wear Navy issued swim gear or can they wear their favorite from back home?

Also, what are they supposed to wear coming/going to the pool? (from the hotel room to the pool)

Thanks!

Since this is town liberty, not leave, all plebes must be in the UOD (e.g. summer whites) when not in your hotel room or house. In the specific case of hotel pool or other public swimming, your plebe must be in the issued swim trunks or suit and must wear the PE gear coming and going.

Every year there are a few plebes who get caught by upperclassmen wearing civvies or otherwise not in the UOD. Don't encourage your plebe to be "that guy" or "that girl."
