Hi, I would like someone to explain the process of contracting with ROTC as it would pertain to my son. He may already know the answer but I want to learn for myself. DS completed his 1st semester at North Georgia and joined the Army National Guard and attended basic/AIT in the spring. He is currently attending the Summer Language Institute at UNG where he is taking Arabic and earning 9 credits. He is enrolled in the fall and will have attained 36 credits after the fall semester. He currently has a 3.6 gpa. My questions are when will he be able to contract with Army ROTC? Does he need to tell his cadre he wants to contract or do they tell him when he is eligible? He also wants to do the SMP program. Does he need to tell someone at UNG or is this something he tells the National Guard? If I am not mistaken I think he has to have at least 30 credits before he can do SMP. Please feel free to tell me anything pertaining to this to educate me better about this. Thanks.

CoachBart,

Thank you for your interest in the process. Please don't get impatient. Sometimes if you don't get a response by now, it usually means that people are busy. Unfortunately I do not know much specifically how SMP works in conjunction with ROTC - however, if I remember reading correctly, I think becoming an SMP cadet requires authorization from his Guard CO. Should he be able to do so, the earliest he could contract would be Soph year I believe.

But I'm sure someone like Clarkson or JCleppe will chime in some time soon.

In the mean time, do a search for SMP on the forums. There has been several discussions regarding SMP/ROTC in the recent past.

SMP is a status that is obtained after contracting with the ROTC unit. Your son should talk with the cadre and express his interest in 1) contracting and 2) getting an SMP agreement filled out.

His unit commander in the ARNG will have to approve an SMP agreement, which will put him into a non-deployable cadet position. He will lose his MOS and be reflagged as a 09R, which is a temporary status for SMP cadets. Basically, once he contracts, he will need to bring that paperwork along with the SMP agreement to his commander to sign. Once the SMP contract is signed by the unit commander, he can submit all his paperwork to the S1 or personnel section to process. It usually takes a few weeks to a month, whereupon he'll be allowed to wear cadet rank and be paid at the grade of E-5.

Thanks!

Sorry if I sounded impatient I actually was just funning around and hoping to prod an answer out of someone ;) Thanks for the answer. I am new to this and trying to learn as much as possible about what my son is involved with in this new career choice.
