Pending Waiver

My dd has been on hold now since May for her medical waiver. She has until the 15th of July to declare her awards for school. Now it is to our understanding that she can not accept any federal awards just in case she receives her ROTC Scholarship. We can not wait any longer for this stupid waiver to be either accepted or rejected. I sometimes get the feeling they want us to give up. And we do not have the funds to put her through college without applying for more loans. Don't these "people" understand that basically everything is pretty much dependent on the out come of these waivers? Her waiver process is in Pensacola, FL. Is there something we can do on our end to help expedite this process. We do not want to give up her scholarship, she has worked so hard these last 4 years to get where she is. The bureaucracy of this all is very frustrating!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You should check with the financial aid office at her school. Most schools would have her accept the aid and then the school would adjust it once her ROTC money is approved, in fact it's the job of the financial aid office to make her compliant. Check with them for the best strategy as they know this communication doesn't often happen timely.
 
That's funny, because we were pretty much told by several people, even financial aid, that the Navy does not want us to accept any federal grants. We can accept everything else, just not federal offers.
 
Tazz, I understand your frustration and feel for you. I have no advice for you on the financial aid front. However, I would suggest you contact the ROTC unit at the college as well as the waiver authority you have been waiting on and express your concern regarding the 7/15 deadline. In my short time on this forum I would say being on hold since May ( 2013 I assume) is not a long wait. I spoke with AROTC CC regarding DS medical waiver and found them to be very professional, nice to deal with and genuinely concerned with getting cadets trough the process as quickly and painlessly as possible. Actually Federal grants are blind in the financial aid awarding and are not a part of the formula for calculating total aid (this regulation changed within the last several years to allow the grants not to be included as pieces of aid). So I think you should clairfy this with the school, go up the chain if need be.

Thanks! We have been in touch with the ROTC unit, and they are aware of her status. They are treating her as if she has received her scholarship and we are moving forward with her welcome aboard package, which we have received and returned back to her unit. We have even been in touch with the waiver authority (on several occasions) and they basically have said it can be a matter of days or months before a decision is made. What do you think would happen if we just declared her scholarship before she officially receives her check?

Sorry, I have no experience with this situation and cannot answer. Hopefully someone here can give you better guidance.
 
Depending upon the size of the ROTC Detachment for the school/area you are dealing with, I would work with them on where to go from here. Most of the Detachments are well staffed and have had a large throughput thru the years so they would have been down the road your going with one of their previous Cadets.
