Janet Napolitano, the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security and former governor of Arizona, is being named as the next president of the University of California system, in an unusual choice that brings a national-level politician to a position usually held by an academic, the Times has learned. Her appointment also means the 10-campus system will be headed by a woman for the first time in its 145-year history.

There can be no good to come from this thread! Interesting piece of news though. You'd think they would pick someone from California to head up their university system.

This is good news for the Coast Guard (probably).

I met the secretary a number of times and she's always been very nice, but she was not a good leader, and surrounded herself with idiots at DHS.

Water seeks its own level.

Why?

FWIW, she's succeeding a guy who born & raised in Pennsylvania, who got his undergrad and law degrees from Penn, and then worked in Texas, Minnesota, and Texas again.

Well, we certainly don't do things that way here in NC! To the best of my recollection the head of the NC University system has always been a North Carolinian. Affinity to the state and all that.

DHS Secretary....

This is good for Homeland Security in general. The department will be much better off, now. Hopefully, the President will appoint a true Homeland Security professional. I would guess not, at this point. Time will tell.

Admiral Allen would be my choice. But who am I, just a US citizen with an opinion.

Really hoping for Thad Allen -former USCG Commandant and a fantastic leader!

I like him, but I wish he would have pushed back more during his time as Commandant and during the oil spill. DHS had its way with him. Not that Adm. Papp has been any better.

LTG Russell "The Rajun Cajun" Honoré would also be a good choice, however I don't believe his political leanings may endear him to the President.

There isn't a single flag officer I know who has ever had ANYTHING good to say about Honore. Adm. Allen and Honore were not "good friends". The two star in D8 that tackled Hurricane Katrina before Adm. Allen showed up, also said he was an idiot.

He's good for show or to deliver a one-liner, and he's great at chomping on a cigar, but from what I've heard, he was horrible at the actually response.

Personally; I'd like to see the whole Homeland Security agency abolished. Along with a lot of other things established after 9-11. It won't happen, but that would be my preference.

+1. I'd add some pre-9/11 things too, like the IRS. Go with the Fair Tax or at least a Flat Tax which should make it possible to greatly reduce the IRS. There's others as well... but then I digress.

I'm not entirely sure what we gain from the creation of DHS. Mashing a very old Border Patrol with Customs, and coming out with a Customs and Border Protection that is plagued with in-fighting between Border Patrol, Customs and Air and Marine...

Slicing INS, and creating ICE (which had a different, clearer name that the FBI objected to... aka more turf issues from the "doesn't play well with others FBI").

Coast Guard and Secret Service came over fully intact.

And after mashing up other organizations like FEMA and USCIS, DHS kept pushing a "One DHS" without realizing that 200 year old organizations already have an identity, and it doesn't always jive with the one a 10 year old organization of underqualified politicals is pushing.

It's like asking the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force to give up their identities to be "One DOD"... and some of those DHS agencies are just as old with just as proud histories.

DHS is a mess. It's a miserable organization and it hasn't lived up to the orginal intent.

I agree. Just wanted to add my recollection that the reason for it was to improve communication and get these orgs in the same chain of command (to improve responsibility and communication). I can't speak to how well it achieved its goals but at the same time I believe that any organization, as it gets larger and larger, gets more and more sclerotic.
