My son is interested in attending a maritime academy. He also happens to be a type 1 diabetic. He is a varsity athlete in 3 different sports and has good control for his T1. My question is does anyone know if this will block him from joining the regiment at one of the maritime academies or from getting his USCG license?

Well I don't believe that it will stop him from participating in the Regiment at any of the Maritimes. The CG Licensing requirements are listed in this document. In particular look at enclosures 3 and 3(a). http://www.sunymaritime.edu/documents/2008/9/24/NVIC 4-08 with Enclosures.pdf
Probably the best advice I could give you would be to contact one of the Maritime Colleges and ask directly- SUNY Maritime's admissions contact information is at this page- I suspect that their answer to your questionwill be the same as any of the other schools as they are all governed by the same USCG regs. http://www.sunymaritime.edu/Admissions/index.aspx

I will contact SUNY Maritime, but it does look like from the USCG document that he will just need to demonstrate good control with no complications. It is good news for a kid who was broken hearted when he could not serve in one of the armed forces! One of the maritime academies has become his new goal, and I just wanted to make sure he wouldn't be automatically disqualified.

With regards to the Type I diabetes and obtaining a MMC, I recommend reading USCG NVIC 4-08. It should answer all your questions.
