Heading to Norwich on Sunday for a sports clinic. This will be our first time there. Since it is a Sunday we won't be able to take a formal tour or talk to admissions, but we will certainly drive and walk around campus. I guess while DS is at the clinic (8:30 to 3:30, with a talk at lunch that parents are invited to), DH and I will explore the area. So far I have come up with Ben and Jerry's factory tour and a few covered bridges that seem to be close by. We don't want to do too much driving as it will be 7 hours home in the evening!
Any other ideas for things to do within about a half hour drive, or a place to eat breakfast or lunch, would be much appreciated!

Hi Soccmom,

It's a beautiful area, but sort of defines the word "rural". Most of the stuff you would want to see is a bit further away.

Burlington is a GREAT college town. Lots of cool things to see and do with an awesome downtown walking-only area. But it's north and probably the wrong way home.

Montpelier is a bit closer, but pretty tame. Bit of a snore as a small New England city. If you are headed South or West on the way home, check out the Quiche Gorge area or Rutland area respectively.

Best breakfast you've ever had at Sewards in Rutland. Great touristy things in Quiche area including the quaint Vermont Country Store on Rt 4 in Willington (??).

I know you were looking for close to Northfield, but the charm is that it's small New England village. Which means not a lot to 'visit' as a tourist. More fun to be part of the local community events there though.

Good luck and enjoy the visit,

MedB

Thanks MedB. We may be able to stop at a few of those places on the way up. Possibly the country store on the way home for food for the road!

There are things to see right in the area. The Norwich Cemetery is on the other side of the dog river, just a 5 minute drive up to the top of the hill. It is a special place with a great view. I'm sure if you ask, you can get specific directions. The museum on campus is worth visiting and on campus also are the mountain bike and hiking trails if you like that. If the Roxbury mountain road is open (which it should be, unless recent storm closure) you can drive the back way to the town of Waitsfield, a beautiful Vermont town (about 30 minutes to get there through scenic drive. You'll drive through the small town ofWarren and Warren waterfalls is there too and easily accessible. http://www.northeastwaterfalls.com/waterfall.php?num=404. On that side of the mountain too is Sugarbush Ski area. Claybrook at Sugarbush is gorgeous (beautiful views, hiking, biking, restaurant for lunch. We stay at Claybrook when we visit our son at Norwich. Have fun. It is a beautiful area!

"Cold Hollow Cider Mill". Get the Cider doughnuts and bring some home. Don't forget to drink all the free cider out of the spigot, the kids loved it. It is very close to Ben & Gerry's. Hockey takes you some unusual places!

Norwich is beautiful....lots of hills...and trees....and windy roads! Made it to Cold Hollow Cider Mill and Green Mountain Coffee Factory. Ran out of time to do Ben and Jerry's before our meeting. DS loved it there, DH thinks it is too far away. Time will tell!
