Hello all, I'm a rising senior and was wondering if you could help determine if I have a chance to receive a four year AROTC scholarship.
My stats:
3.6 GPA
1160 SAT (reading/math)
3 years track, captain last year
2 years xcountry
Eagle Scout with a forest conservation award
Founder leader of a local clean up crew.
Founder/leader of intramural volleyball team
Founder/leader of clothing drive
Odyssey of the mind 4 years
Marching/concert band 4 years, 1 year as as librarian.

Thank you for your time and feedback.

A lot will depend on which schools you list on your application.

You might want to try the SAT again or try the ACT. AROTC superscores your tests so if you can raise any section it will help your overall score. 1100 or above is enough to get you the max points on your interview/academics section but a higher score will only help your overall application.

Are you a NHS member.

Is your GPA weighted or unweighted?

Will you be Captain of your track team again this year, how about the X-Country team.

Make sure to list anything like, section leader in the band, leadership positions in Boy Scouts.

Nobody will be able to give you a clear answer whether your are competitive this year, all I can say is that there were scholarship winners last year with Stats similar to yours.

What schools have you listed on your application.

One other thing, if you decide to take the SAT or ACT again, still have your application ready to submit for the first board using the scores you have now. Test scores are one of the things you can update once your application has gone before the board.

I'd agree with Jcleppe. The SAT is a little low, I'd try the ACT because you're allowed to guess and it just seemed much easier to me. But you can always retake and do better. A lot also depends on school choices, the Army is more likely to fund you for 3 years in-state versus 4 years at a private school.

We'll be competing this year! Check my stats on an older thread of mine and tell me what you think :thumb: Good luck!

I wouldn't be too quick to assume this. There are a lot of variables that factor into the scholarship process - a whole lot that isn't revealed to the public for that matter.

What are you looking at majoring in? Also, when you consider colleges, you should try to apply to ones where your stats fit into the top 25%. If you apply to a lot of schools that is outside your reach, you will be at a disadvantage. Cadet Command does not consider whether you get into said school - that is your responsibility get into said school. Last thing you want to have happen is to transfer your scholarship to a different school - especially if it's across different brigades.

It's good that you are a founder/leader of several organizations. When you go up for an interview, make sure you talk about this - they are looking for leadership. In your case, it's even better than being the usual club officer, etc.

Just to emphasizse what JCleppe said, we truly don't know your chances. Things change ALL THE TIME, and every year with it. And now more than ever, since the Service doesn't have quite the same pot of money they did, say several years ago. With OEF drawing down, we will see less of a demand on manpower - we already are. The Army is planning on cutting 12-13 brigades, the National Guard is furloughing troops. We will most likely start seeing more stringent requirements to be awarded a scholarship - a lot less lenient than in the past.

Best of luck to you. And from a runner - stay healthy (don't try to push through the pain like so many of us do). Your goal now is to stay healthy and commission into the Army. Not saying that you shouldn't try your best at invitationals, districts, states, etc - just be careful.

I was definitely planning in taking the SATs one more time in the early fall, I have that study guide book and intend to improve my score drastically. I also forgot to mention I was SPL for Boy Scouts a year. I plan on majoring either in history or political science. I do plan on applying to some really good schools so SATs are a high priority right now.

Thank you for all the replies, they have all been helpful.

Make sure that the test date will not conflict with the 1st board date --> make sure there's at least a couple weeks difference between the 2 dates to ensure that your score will arrive in time.

Good luck.

It took me 5 seconds to look up the SAT test dates...5 October. Not going to be able to have new scores in for the first board. That means you need to make sure you don't complete your file before the first board. You do not want to be boarded first round if you aren't happy with your test scores. if you do get boarded you are essentially stuck with your file score. Hopefully that makes sense.

Clarkson, I thought test scores were the one thing that could be updated after being boarded. Is this not true?

Clarskson, as usual, is correct. The devil is in the details. An applicant CAN update SAT scores in his/her file if s/he hasn't been Boarded yet. If the applicant didn't make it to Board #1, either by timing, or Board #1 didn't see all the files, and the Applicant has to wait for Board #2, then yes, the SAT scores can be added to the unBoarded file prior to Board #2.

When an applicant is Boarded, they are assigned a Whole Candidate Score, of which the SAT is one component part. Once a Whole Candidate Score is assigned by the Board, it stays the same through subsequent Boards. They will not later re-score an applicant to accomodate a new SAT score.

Having said that, it is my understanding the last time I checked that both the SAT and ACT test dates in September will generate official scores that can be added to the Applicant file prior to the File closure deadline (around Oct. 10) for Board #1 in late October. This also means an Applicant who is taking the tests for the first time can review those test results at end of Sept, 1st week of Oct, and decide if they want to purposely miss the 1st Board and retake the SAT/ACT to have a better score included in the file to be reviewed by Board #2.

This also reminds me that Applicants should certainly take the SAT/ACT twice in the 2nd semester of Jr. year, so that they are in a better position to have a score suitable to be reviewed in Board #1.

I was retaking the SATs to get them higher, for the schools I intend on applying to. By the way does anyone know the exact date I need my application in by?

Is this something new, both my sons were told that the SAT and ACT scores could be updated even after meeting the first board, and the WPS would be adjusted with the new scores for the next board.

This is what I thought as well but so far have two people saying otherwise.
