CGAS!!!!

Must have missed this when you posted. Congrats! DS was in this program last year, and is a swab now. He has written that CGAS Orientation seemed tougher than Swab Summer (up to the point he wrote). It cetainly made life easier for us this year. S-Day Monday! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. An MMI professor also posts here occasionally. Is yours going to GMC or MMI?

S-Day Monday!

Stupid question, but what does the S stand for? Scholar?

Last night DD learned that there are a total of 40 scholars this year. Out of the 2000 qualified CGA applicants, 600 were considered for the scholars program.

I saw that info as well. Yes "S-Day" is used for the Scholar's Reporting-In Day. We never heard that term last year though. It was just R-Day for Scholars.

CGAS at GMC

DS was assigned to attend GMC.

Of the 40 CGA Scholars, 30 will go to MMI and 10 to GMC.

CGAS 2015

DD got email yesterday indicating that she was moved from the wait list into the CGAS class of 2015. Our whole family is delighted, although it still doesn't seem quite real just yet.

Any current or former Scholars care to offer feedback on either MMI or GMC, or their experience in CGAS in general? Everything I have read has been quite positive about the preparation students got and how it ultimately made life at CGA easier and more productive.

Curious: is there any chance of not getting appointed to CGA after CGAS, assuming of course that the scholar doesn't blow it (i.e., improves grades and fitness, maintains medical qualification and stays out of trouble)? I'm thinking of blowing DD's college fund on a Maserati but want to be sure she won't need it.

Congratulations to her. She's actually going to get paid to go to school...real cash, too!

Acceptance to CGAS means that she has been provisionally accepted to the class of 2019. At Indoc this summer she'll sign a standard enlistment contract, and she'll also sign a program contract that says if she meets the program standards she will receive her appointment. Slots are not pulled away from the CGAS during the year. It's her's to lose!

I tell the students here that CGAS has three missions: prep for the academy, show that a student can succeed at the academy, and see if the academy is the right choice for the student. It's a good opportunity to try out the academy lifestyle.

Don't spend the money yet. She may want to go to grad school.

Check out MMI's and GMC's web sites for more information on those schools. There is also a USCGA Scholars Program facebook group.

BZ!

Thanks for explaining the provisional appointment process. Good to know she'll actually have something in writing that as long as she does X,Y,Z and doesn't do 1, 2, 3 she is appointed.

The facebook page is proving very informative - thanks for mentioning that as well.
