If anyone in the past has received a scholarship to the University of Virginia could you please post them in this forum. I am trying to get a benchmark of how I stack up. Thanks so much!

That is really too vague of a question because UVA has every ROTC branch, and each one is different regarding scholarships.

Additionally it would vary depending on whether you are IS or OOS.

For example, AFROTC doesn't really care if you are IS or OOS, they place the emphasis on Tech majors(75%+ are Tech majors). They also do not superscore SAT/ACTs.

NROTC requires an IS, does superscore, and places the emphasis on STEM (tech) I believe 85% are STEM recipients, so your residency can be a player in the equation.

UVA is considered a public Ivy. It has been for eons ranked no lower than number 5 in the nation for public universities. Most of the time it is number 2 behind Berkeley, and above UNCCH. It is insanely competitive IS, and can be more so OOS because by VA law, they must accept no more than 30% from OOS. (VA residents pay in part for the school, so it is a bennie to be a VA resident).

Good luck. My only advice is if you want a scholarship for UVA look at their home page and be in the top 25% that they post for the previous admission yr group or better yet at the top edge in those parameters.

Also remember it is the whole candidate. 2300 SAT, 4.0 uwcgpa, Valedictorian, every AP offered is not enough if you have no ECs, no leadership, and a low PFA. Every part counts. The academics is 60% for AFROTC, but you fail one portion of the PFA, you fail the PFA = 0 points. That can take you from a Type 1 to a 7 in a second. Have no ECs on top of that and you can find yourself with a TWE from both UVA and AFROTC. In essence, you are academically gifted, but not the best candidate because you have spent your life studying and college is not just academics, especially as a ROTC cadet/mid. It is also about time management outside of academics.

Thanks Pima Appreciate it. To clarify what I'm looking for is anyone who is in ROTC at UVA regardless which branch to post their stats so I can get an idea of where my DS stands.

Bronco,

I believe your DS is applying for AFROTC, not to beat the bush dead, but again, knowing anyone's stats' won't help because for another example:

AROTC does superscore, and they are trending towards tech/STEM, but not to the level AF/NROTC are currently at in this regard.

If an AROTC cadet says they had 2000 Superscore and non-tech major (govt), that might sound great, but for AFROTC cadet as a non-tech they probably need at least 2100 in one SITTING, whereas, the tech major may need only 2000 because the bulk of scholarships are for tech.

IOTW it is the devil in the details that matters. On a whole only about 18% get scholarships. Somewhere in the bowels of afrotc.com is a stats page regarding the SAT/ACT needed for a scholarship, and for UVA I would say it is close to AFROTC selection.

Here is UVA link
http://admission.virginia.edu/admission/profile

Remember only 30% are admitted from OOS, thus my guess would be OOS will be at the 1400 out of 1600 marker.

For AFROTC, the last I remember was their avg SAT for Type 1,2, and 7 ranged from 1280-1360...again best sitting, not superscore.

Finally, the other detail for AFROTC is HQ AFROTC does not "talk" to AFA regarding candidates. They do not take into consideration if the candidate is applying for one or both. 95% of SA applicants are told to apply for ROTC scholarships as Plan B. The reverse is not true for ROTC candidates.

It is very confusing, and I know you want to get a handle on the process as a parent, but as much as it is the cliche here it is the truth.

You have 0% chance if you don't apply.

The variables are too big without you narrowing them down to feel confident/comfortable in any stat posted.

Another great example of variables, diversity. UVA has a diversity program, and many branches also have diversity programs. It can be a hook.

In the event that folks do post their stats - don't be too heavily dependent upon them. Please remember that things can change every year, regarding selection process based on stats. The stats that Person A had for the 2016 group may have not been awarded, whereas Person B for 2017 year group could have been awarded. With budget constraints and draw downs, there will be less money in the pool to draw from as well. This will be reflected in the selection process --> selecting candidates with higher stats.

Not trying to be a debbie downer, I just want you to recognize that selection process changes every year.

People always say those who win ROTC scholarships are usually in the top 25% of the schools they get them to.

So compare UVA's academics versus your DS's academics. If he is in the top 25% of those admitted, he has a good shot ACADEMICALLY of getting the scholarship.

I am the applicant actually. Im just trying to get a hold of someone who has been in my shoes and has received a scholarship to UVA. Thanks though for the information. And what does DS even mean, I get that refers to son and daughter but why the D.

Well compare your stats to UVA. If you surpass the averages that got admitted, you have a good shot, in terms of academics.

Not necessarily true.

When you get into the top level universities in this country (think top 50), GPA and test scores become almost irrelevant in both the admissions and ROTC Scholarship arena. This has been true (at least on the admissions side) for decades. For example Harvard turns down more Vals than they admit. And everyone there is not #1 in their graduating class. UVA, Berkeley, Michigan, and a few other top publics do much of the same.

The thinking here is that once you get beyond a certain GPA/test score combination, they know you have the academic preparation for success. The next most important questions are first do you have "other" talents that you bring that will have you achieving above your peers and second have you overcome something in your life that indicates that you will continue to overcome the obstacles to achievement that typically stall other similarly prepared applicants? Colleges use various parts of the application to do this screening and are very coy about describing their formula (lest every applicant learns how to imitate it).

What bothers me about this whole thread is the concept that I can find out who got in last year, what their stats were and be assured that I am competitive. A single data point (poster on this site) is not a valid test for this. The plural of anecdote (single poster on this site) is not data either.

If the OP wants to know if his/her application is competitive with the scholarship awardees from previous years, the best place to start is with the cadre at that particular school. They have the data. If you interview with them and do well, they will give you some guidance if you ask in the correct manner. This isn't about reassuring the nervous student. It is about managing the application process. If an applicant is a great person in the interview, but the stats don't hold up to previous years' recipients, you will still get a great score on your interview, but the PMS is likely to answer your question with a "don't give up hope" type of answer. And if they really like you, perhaps that will pay off if you are a walk-on.

Now I understand the concept of asking the question of should I even bother listing UVA in my 7 schools if you have a long list including multiple reach schools (think Ivies).

When it comes down to it, will the answer you receive here actually change any action on your part (i.e. adding it to your list of schools)? If not, then why are you asking it?

Bronco

Until you are willing to give more info, such as, IS...where IS, NoVA; OOS, where....AR, ND? we really should end this conversation.

You need to understand that acceptance is more than stats. It is the WHOLE applicant. I think that is also what goalie was stating.

You could be from Fairfax with a 1450 and get rejected, while a kid from Norfolk with a 1360 gets accepted.

Your could be from CA with a 1470 and get rejected, but a kid from Arkansas with a 1300 gets accepted.

I understand you don't want to disclose your stats, but until you do, we are left with giving you vague answers. The best we can say is that you have 0% chance if you don't apply.

Good luck, best thoughts and wishes for your upcoming yr.

The reason I was asking the question is because I want to get an idea of how the scholarship works and how competitive it is to go to a certain school (UVA).
I was hoping to get a response from students at UVA or someone with info about UVA specifically.

Scholar, athlete, leader...

Stats are nice, but the whole person concept can't be quantified.

As I said in my last post, the only one with the data that will give you any kind of idea will be the PMS at UVA. Have you initiated a conversation?

Ask Clarkson or Marist (posters on this board). If you are interested in attending a school and being in their BN, you should initiate the conversation to find out about their unit. Plenty of threads around here on this topic. And once you get the conversation started, and you've talked about your whole candidate profile, they will be able to give you a far better idea of how competitive you are than anyone on this forum could ever give you.

Please don't look at this as a "If I get a 3.X gpa I'm in or below a 3.Y, I'm out." It doesn't work like that at all. If you choose to think of it that way, you are more than likely NOT to be awarded a scholarship to that school, as you've missed out on all the other details.

Last try here.

All of your posts are regarding AFROTC scholarship.

AFROTC is unique since it is not tied to the college. Asking an AROTC/NROTC recipient will not matter in the least to judge how you rack and stack.

Nor will last yrs because nobody knows this yrs pool.

In the end, I have to now agree...contact the det. or you may want to post this on www.collegeconfidential.com with a ROTC tag line. This is not a college board site, it is SA/ROTC/OCS site. College confidential is college, not SA/ROTC. Take info from both and weigh them to give you the best path regarding chances.

In my 5+ yrs here I know of 2 UVA scholarship recipients. TPG's DS (NROTC-MO) and Terp (NROTC). TPG is a VA resident. Not sure about Terp. Again, if you are going AFROTC, NROTC stats are moot!

LAST TIME...WHOLE CANDIDATE...NATIONAL POOL FOR ROTC APPLICANTS. You can be in TX and get a scholarship to UVA while a VA resident doesn't.

Good catch, Pima. Wasn't paying attention to other threads by OP. Was too focused on the first post of the thread.

If Army ROTC is in the mix pay attention to my previous posts about contacting the unit. Otherwise with AF, Pima is correct - it is your overall stats against the national applicant pool, not your school of choice that determines your "chances" of a scholarship.

And of course, that AFROTC scholarship is not usable at UVA unless you are admitted. And we know nothing about how you would stack up against the school applicant pool.

The same is true for Army, Navy and Marines. At least for AFROTC they can take it to their 2nd choice college without going through the transfer process.

I just think Bronco does not understand the admission process for colleges and the boarding process for ROTC.

They are 2 separate processes. Your major, your resume, your residency will be factors.

Bronco, here is an easier way...if you school has the Naviance program, use it. It won't help regarding ROTC scholarship, but it will illustrate from your HS if you are competitive. It illustrates in green, amber and red dots all of the students that applied in previous yrs.

However, again for the umpteenth time, stats are @50-60% of the score for admittance. ECs, and hooks are in the equation too.

I don't need to know your stats. It is not any of my business. You on the other hand need to accept what is being said. Every applicant is unique, don't try to judge, especially if you don't ask...are they Is or OOS, are they part of the diversity program, are they a legacy, do they have a hook?

Stats, such as 3.96 uwcgpa, 2230 SAT, top 5% means nothing without knowing everything else.

FWIW, a few yrs back there was a poster that was connected with UVA admissions. They stated emphatically, ROTC scholarship makes no impact on their admission decision. Some colleges, like UNCCH and Clarkson have a pull regarding admissions if the applicant has a ROtC scholarship in hand.

Finally, why UVA, why not VT, VMI? If your goal is to be an officer in the military, they are 2 great colleges with strong academic programs. They have Corps. and are known to produce great officers via ROTC.
~~~Plus, at least for VT, you won't have to wear a tie to the FB games...granted you may have to wear a military uniform and do push ups!:wink:
~~~ There is also GMU, JMU and VCU too. GMU is tied to UMD AFROTC, and it would be x-town, but UMDCP was selected as the best AfROTC large size det. in the nation for 2012.

DS is 4th year OOS at UVA. He recieved a 2 year scholarship after 2 years as a college programmer, after turning down USNA. He and all his OOS friends at UVA were at or near the top of their classes. 800/640, lots of AP's and captain of 2 teams, 4.0 unweighted GPA. The navy already paid the fall tuition of $22645 so is very pricey OOS.

Thanks Terp for the stats

And Pima if I wanted the structure of a Corps of Cadets like the one at Tech and VMI I would go to the Naval Academy. The whole reason for ROTC is that cadets get to have a normal college experience and that is not how it is at Tech or VMI with the 5 days a week in uniform.

For Strength and Honor:
UW:3.85 W:4.2
Varsity Football
Varsity Lacrosse Captain
NHS President
SAT: 1300

Broncos-there are a number of rotc mids and cadets that turned down service academy appointments to attend UVA. Most wanted(including my son) a normal college experience. Your stats look OK(SAT should be higher) and depends if instate or not. I think you would be in lower 50% SAT if instate and probably far reach OOS. Consider retake or ACT. Just MHO.
