Plenty of pictures online today from the New Cadet BBQ at Day Camp...I mean Beast Barracks. Definitely thought the new Comm would put an end to the lameness of Beast.

From what we were briefed, it's TRADOC, not USMA, making the call as far as corrective punishment is concerned.

Did TRADOC issue the candy bars, too?

USMA isn't under TRADOC. It's its own MACOM. Sounds fishy.

Seems like that #1 Public College ranking is the priority these days.

But at least it helps attract those new cadets who are here for "the academics" and run 26 minute 2-miles...

Please tell me that didn't happen.

26 minutes is rounding down. The NC was in a buddy's platoon 1st Detail. When asked why she had not arrived in shape, she said something to the effect of "I just want to fly under the radar and get through beast, then focus on academics."

By flying under the radar, she meant getting put on profile on the third day of Beast and sitting out of all physical activity since.

It's scary to watch.

I thought you got separated if you missed a certain number of days during beast?

That is the definition of a scrub.

Related question: Does the Admissions department ever go back to review their decisions? As in to analyze along the lines of "We valued X grade over Y sport, and as a result ended up with an immobile New Cadet, so let's not value X over Y anymore?"

I've heard from a couple of decent sources (I trust them and they would be in the know, so to speak, but they don't have any significant power per se in the matter) that a few MoC's in my region are reevaluating placing extreme amounts of favor into applicants who want to be engineering majors, and this trend may move uphill towards Admissions themselves. Apparently this attitude of hunting out tech majors has caused a few problems.

But regardless, a 26 minute 2-mile is awful.......I thought I'd have a hard time with a 14 minute run, and it wasn't so much the lack of fitness, but the attitude (speculating from her response) of "staying under the radar" and focusing on academics, that got my attention.

We have kids like that at The Citadel, and they aren't really popular. They're seen, and this is often true, as those that try to game the system and bend the rules until just before breaking in order to get through their years there. There's a difference between the focused engineering student or very passionate literature major, who really just likes learning about their subject, and the cadet who takes every opportunity to use academics as an excuse to not do something (parades, inspections, mandatory sporting events, everything that cadets perpetually complain about, etc.).

Back to topic, how does West Point treat extremely out of shape cadets? The Citadel's AROTC program gives a cadet until the next PT test (about 2 months on remedial PT) before their contract is suspended. How long before you're in it deep at West Point?

In general, you have 90 days to retake the APFT and pass. However, her profile probably prevents her from taking the first record APFT at the end of CBT, so she will have a few weeks to a few months to take one with her academic year company (assuming she comes off profile).

From what we were told last year, they are going to start going after "Fragile Cadets" who have not taken a PT test in 18+ months (before that number freaks you out, remember that there are guys like me who did not take an APFT for a year+ because of ACL injuries, etc.).

In all likelihood, she will get put in the mandatory company workout program, scrape by with a passing score at the end of the semester, and continue to scrape by until she graduates and takes the first female Ranger slot because her grades were so high...

Don't know if any of you are a part of any of the Parents' Groups. I have been amazed at the past three weeks, with regard to the handwringing and stressing over the "handling of the cadets" by a small but vocal minority.

Holy hell people, do you think we call a time-out in the Stan or Iraq because the temp breaks 90 degrees? It is unbelievable.

Our NC( DS) has told us it was far simpler and less stressful than he was ready for. He's wondering when the actual preparation for soldiering begins. To some of the other posters' points, what he has described has reminded me of some summer camp with some PT thrown in for good measure.

With the bleeding heart parents, I am amazed their children even gained an appointment, but maybe that just illustrates their kiddos' resolve. I know I'd work like hell to get out of that environment at home!

I'd love to see some of those posts, if you don't mind sharing

The FB parents' groups are confidential. These groups allow, among other things, parents a place where they can share their concerns knowing that these thoughts will not be shared outside the group, especially to Beast cadre

I agree with FlyBoy in that some parents are over the top and sometimes the groups foster concern where there wasn't concern before. But usually, the worried parents are reassured, consoled and mentored by other parents who have been there-done that.

They're turning USMA into pricey ROTC. Pattycake and playing Army.

Sadly that really is the case in some small private college's programs. An acquaintance of mine at one says that land nav is only taught during MS3 pre-LDAC lab, and PT is only mandatory for the first 2 years.

I promise this is not the case at The Citadel, and therefore I trust all SMC's.

What?

26 minutes to run 2 miles and a attitude to go with it? You've got to be kidding me....right? And there were a 100 highly motivated kids left on NWL who could have filled that spot.

Push Hard, Press forward

Yeah, the smaller programs can really skate by. One of my buddies went to a private school in California. He had mandatory PT once a week for the first two years. That was it.
