Can anyone provide any insight about upgrading a 3 year AD scholarship to a 3.5 year scholarship? Is this based just solely on grades? When do I need to start the process? Are the current budget cuts likely to affect this program?

Thanks,

Bill

I assume you are a high school senior with a 3 yr. scholarship entering college in August. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing "to do" other than work hard, nail the first apft, and actively participate in everything that the battalion has to offer, even the stuff that's "optional." You may ask the MS3s, 4s what the history of campus based scholarships with your particular bn. Show them you want that extra year or .5 by busting your tail.

I'll also add the little-known fact that you can upgrade to a 4 year scholarship as well. It depends on your school's battalion's size and budget, but everyone in my unit last year that had a 3 year that worked for a 4 year got one.

Aren't each Bn's processes/criteria different from each other?

Upgrades aren't a program...it's not something that usually happens. Here is how it's going to go down if it happens. Your Battalion may be told that there are funds available to upgrade scholarships. At that time they will determine who they want to upgrade. Depending on the funds available they may upgrade all or some of the 3 year scholarships. They probably aren't going to ask who wants to upgrade, because everyone is going to want to upgrade, so the determination will be made based on some criteria. I can't say it enough that you have to worry about what you can control and not what you can't control. You can't control who gets upgraded, but you can control your fitness level and your academic performance and your participation level. Don't count on an upgrade, you are already bought and sold. There is no real reason to upgrade you if we know you are going to be there next fall. If you do get offered an upgrade you just won the lottery. If I'm a betting man I would bet that there won't be upgrades this year, since they had the snafu with the transfer requests. They ended up having to grant more transfers then they expected, which caused them to dip into next years money. There has to be extra unused money for there to be upgrades.

Clarkson, do you know how they grant more than expected? Couldn't CC just have said no to the transfer requests?

It's a little complicated and I don't know all the details, but CC was adhering pretty closely to their initial allocations until they realized that too many applicants that should have received offers, but didn't have the right schools didn't. The only way to fix that problem was to take a risk and make offers based on the expected budget for next year. They did initially say no to all the transfer requests, but that would have meant a ton of blue chippers would have gone elsewhere.
