Found this link online re: scoring software that addresses "extended scale" scoring - i.e. scoring above the max 100 point level for each of the events - http://apftscore.com/notes.php

Here's a quote:

Extended Scale
The extended scale feature allows for scores beyond the normal maximum of 300 points.

In accordance with the older FM 21-20, the extended scale option will award one point for each additional push-up and sit-up beyond the max, and one point for each six-second decrease in time from max, but only if all three events are maxed.

Please note that the new Army physical readiness manual, FM 7-22, has eliminated the extended scale. However, I have elected to continue to include this feature for the benefit of specific users that will still find it useful. Users should keep in mind that extended scale scoring may not be used for any official Army purposes.

Have seen scores above 300 posted in relation to LDAC, etc.

How exactly are these calculated? Do extended scores truly count only if you can max all three events? Are extended scores "official?"

Wondering because my DS is working to increase his scores before reporting for FROG week at UNG - if he can only max 2 of 3 events, is it worth going beyond max in the ones he can, or should he conserve his energy?

I have a friend on the AROTC side who got a 325 on his 1st official APFT. The way it was explained to me is that you get points for every rep above maximum in each category, HOWEVER, you only get those extra points if you max every category. Say you go over max in push-ups and sit-ups, but don't max the run, you get the max points from the areas you maxed in but do not get the extra points from any rep over max. Its only if you max all 3 categories do you get any extra points you may have earned.

You must max all 3 events to go on the extended scale. If he's not maxing all 3, he can save his energy...or push himself.

The reason you see extended scale scores at LDAC, but not in big army is because the only ones who use the extended scale are the schoolhouses.

Extended scale scores don't count for actual accessions points, but they do serve as a kind of "gotcha" moment for a physically fit person to compare their relative fitness to another.

LDAC likes to post them because they showcase ROTC cadets' overall excellent physical fitness standards.

Like someone else said, they are mostly used in a schoolhouse environment to foster friendly competition between students or cadets. With the extended scale, it's possible to know who is truly a stud.

Thanks Non Ducor Duco, -Bull-,and khergan for your responses!
