My son is seriously interested in attending either Mass Maritime or NY Maritime. We have read through their websites and I truly don't think he could go wrong with either choice (if he is lucky enough to be admitted). He is interested in either Marine Engineering or Facilities Engineering. We will be visiting both schools to also learn more about each school.

I am interested in any personal experiences about either school that may be helpful in determining which school is a better fit. He would join the regiment at either school as well. I would also be interested in good places to stay overnight when visiting each school.

Thanks in advance for your help!

First, just my Personal opinion he's be better off studying marine engineering and obtaining his third engineers license.
Second, visit both schools and see which is the right fight. Mass has a history of being a little more regimental. It's not to say it's good or bad just more regimental than SUNY.
Third look into either in state or regional tuition based upon your residence.
Honestly you couldn't go wrong with either school, so consider cost.
Finally don't be afraid to look at Great Lakes Maritime or Texas A&M at Galveston, both great schools.

SIP

I also recommend looking into the Student Incentive Program where your son can get $8000 a year in scholarship money from MARAD.

Tankercaptain,

Thank you for the insight. We are looking at Mass. and NY because we live in Virginia and it qualifies us for the in-region rates at both schools. You mentioned Marine engineering with the engineers license was a great option. Does this option offer more opportunity to get a job afloat? He is interested in getting the engineers license no matter which major he chooses. He likes the "hands-on" aspect of the career.

We will also look into the SIP program. That would certainly be a big help on the budget!

Again just me own personal opinion and years being in the industry but he'd be better off taking marine engineering if he wanted to goto sea. With that being said I believe that there are excellent opportunities ashore too for marine engineers.

Place to stay in NY

It was suggested to me by my Schuyler friends that New Rochelle is the place to stay when visiting SUNY. There are a few hotels that offer a maritime rate, you'll have to ask when calling.

Tarrytown and Rye are also pretty convenient, have a fair number of hotels and all are around a 1/2 hour or less from the Fort.

The Best Western on the Cape side of the Bourne bridge is actually pretty nice up in Mass according to a close friend.

My son would unfortunately not be able to pass the DODMERB exam. He would love to be able to attend KP. It is a fantastic school from everything I have read.

Did you investigate whether your son could get a waiver for whatever issue he has with DODMERB?

Yep, He is a type 1 diabetic. Unfortunately that disqualifies him without the chance for a waiver.

Well, Ft. Schuyler or Mass. Maritime are great schools too. Good luck to you and your son. I hope he gets what he wants.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. He is excited about the opportunities offered at each school and looks forward to visiting and finding a good fit for him.

First Year Parent

My son is in his first year at SUNY Maritime. So far so good! I think these schools are an affordable way to get a degree and set yourself up for employment! Our son was offered the chance to apply for the SIP but we want him to make the service decision later, so we are footing the bill for now.
