WIFI for cadets?

Sorry if this has already been covered in another post, but as a parent of a new Cadet, I had a few questions:

- Will the C4C's have access to wifi? If so, how often and where? Can they access it some of the time with their phone and/or tablet?
- I am trying to determine if getting him an Iphone would make sense at this point. We had told him we would bring one when we visited on PW, but we are not sure he will get any use out of it. Can they use on weekends?

Thanks in advance for your answers.....

If you are referring to the campus network, it is a tightly administered network and only authorized users and devices can have access. The use of phones and media is squadron specific, but many squadrons will allow phone use on the weekends for Doolies.

TY

Thank you.

Still, when they get to use their "phones" on the weekends, will they be allowed to access the internet through WIFI, or will it be solely 3G/4G with their phones? We are trying to determine if data plan will suffice, or if it even makes sense to consider a smartphone at this point...thanks again.

They do not have wifi, can't FaceTime. Phone service is fairly good depending on carrier and squadron (where they are placed in the buildings).

As has been said many times, phone privileges are squadron dependent and also can be used as punishment and rewards.

Thank you.

So, they have wifi in some areas, but are you saying they just cannot access it with their personal devices? Will this change at some point while they are at the AFA?

It sounds like upgrading him to an Iphone right now would make no sense. Am I right in concluding that?

They cannot connect to the campus network with personal devices. But a smartphone is a much more useful device when they do have it. Your choice and it will really depend on their squadron. No need to make any decision now, wait to see what their policies are before you make a choice.

We still have our daughter on a family plan and she has an IPhone 4. Every month I get a little note saying that she is running up to her data limit because there is no wifi connection at USAFA. She does get wifi when she goes to her sponsor family and when she's out and about at Starbucks and whatnot. If you would like to get your cadet a new phone, they'd sure like it and it is useful but you might want to get a generous data plan with it. As a C4C, it might not be worth it for as early as PW. Maybe wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas when it's clear phone usage is not so limited.

Thank you Melinda.

I'm being nosey, so I understand if you cannot answer, but does your daughter have a 2GB data plan with her phone?

Hot Spot Hub

Does anyone know if a Verizon Hotspot like the Jetpack 4G is allowed? This way could be put up high or where signal is strongest for personal wifi use on smart phone.
Regards
John

No worries, Barnabuzz...I think we have a 3G plan (I'm pretty forgetful about this stuff!) and my daughter has never actually gone over the limit, though has come close. She's good about limiting her use when she needs to. Again, this is all from about mid-October on, so probably not essential by PW.

What obout e-mail ?

Wont the C4C cadets have an e-mail account, that they will be accessing through their school/personal computer ?
And if so, what would be the e-mail format ?

Yes, the academy uses a campus email system. The client the students use is Outlook. What do you mean by format (Text versus HTML?).

Just FYI
Way back in 2008 when my DS was a C4C, it was strongly recommended that he keep a separate account (gmail, comcast, aol, or whatever) for personal mail - the cadets get a TON on squadron and school related email on their official account, and this was a good way to help avoid distraction etc. By the end of of the year, and into the next years, this was not nearly as much of an issue, but in the beginning, I think it helped....

Agreed. Our son told us to never send anything to his USAFA email address. We always used his personal account.
