Questions about Norwich and The Citadel

Hello,

My name is Jeremy. I am about to be a senior in high school. I have a ~2.5 GPA and scored a 1360 on my SAT ( I am taking the SAT again in October). I screwed up my freshman year and I didn't do too well in my 1st semester of sophomore year. But since then, I have made a great turn around and have matured quite a bit. I realized that school isn't a joke and if I mess it up there isn't any going back and trying again. Although my grades don't exactly show it, I am a thoughtful and intelligent guy. I have playing guitar for 8 years (I am almost 18 now). I am practically fluent in mandarin Chinese since I have been taking it as a foreign language since the beginning of high school. I have been to Cuba for a week with a team of humanitarian workers to aid their Jewish community. I also have a remarkable memory and have a great vocabulary.

Now for my question... With my story, do you guys think I could get accepted into Norwich University or The Citadel? I could write a solid essay on how I used to be an immature kid, and how I matured. I wish I didn't have to write that type of essay, but do you guys think I have a chance?

You definitely do for The Citadel. It's not a particularly difficult school to get into.

You volunteer work helps make up for academics. The "whole person" concept. Good luck!

Have you participated in athletics? That also helps a lot.

Look at school averages for SAT/ACT and GPA to give you a better outlook on where you stand.

Try to get your GPA up, I know you don't have a lot of time but the higher the better. Other than being moderatly fluent in Chinese and playin guitar, do you have any extracurricular activities/athletics?

It is far more difficult if you are out-of-state.

I'll be OOS applying to VMI come September. I'm nervous because I listed it as my #1 school choice on my ROTC application, and I really want to go there. I saw the average stats, but I feel like that's bogged down by in-state acceptances. Can anyone tell me my chances?

Rising senior, Biology major, 3.83 CGPA for high school. 29 composite ACT (33E, 33R, 22M, 28S). Elected National Honor Society secretary for senior year, and have been NHS member for two years. Two years of Varsity tennis, two years of JV football, a year of JV basketball, and now go to kickboxing year round along with tennis. Over 90 internship hours at local fire department, co-organized several community service projects, and have participated in many more.

Chance me for VMI? And heck, ROTC scholarship as well?

You're alright for VMI, ROTC I'm pretty sure you'll get at least a 3 year scholarship.

I go to The Citadel but their admissions standards are similar and I would say you have a chance.
Army ROTC scholarships are very easy to come by at school- all my friends who wanted one got one. Also do not be discouraged if you do not get a scholarship now. Some students earn one during the first year or two of college.

One important thing in the admissions process is to build a relationship with the admissions office. Make sure they know who you are. When you visit the schools make sure you let them know you are coming, spend time with them and thank them afterwards. When they know you really want to attend you get a little extra consideration.

Also, I have ADHD and am taking Ritalin... If I stop taking it during my Senior year in highschool and forward, will I be qualified for an ROTC scholarship?

afraid FMB is badly misinformed. This years knob class at The Citadel averaged a 3.5 GPA and 1100 SAT; it aint Princeton but it aint South Bum**** Community College either.
Do I infer that the 1350 SAT was on a 2400 point scale? Most colleges still use the 1600 point scale to prevent confusion so what was your score based on that. Truthfully with a 2.5 and >900 SAT you are pretty iffy as an OOS but of course the extracurriculars are a big factor, particularly athletics. If you can buckle down this fall and pull up the GPA and SAT you will be much more competetive, if you can eke out a 3.0/1000 you will be on much firmer ground. Just takes some effort and desire on your part, I wish you luck.

as a follow on, athletics are highly desirable and not having participated is a negative but most important is can you handle college level academics. As for ADHD not an expert on current medical standards in the military, could be a problem but might have to be evaluated; not aware it is disqualifying unless someone else knows more on that than I.
4 year schollys are highly competetive, not much chance without a 3.6/1250; the standards are less strict for 2&3 year but they also look heavily at your performance in ROTC like APFT, grades and at SMCs your conduct record.
