Study abroad and ROTC?

I'm going to be a freshman in college this year and I'm also doing AROTC. I've always wanted to study abroad in London, but I'm not really sure how/if that would work with ROTC. I'd preferably like to study there for a semester during my sophomore year, and I'm on a 3 year AD scholarship if that makes any difference.

Could anyone tell me if this would be possible? And if it is possible, is it frowned upon by the cadre because you'd be missing a semester of PT, labs, etc?

study abroad

Like so many issues I believe this is battalion specific, so best to ask cadre, though other cadets may know also. My DS' battalion encourages study abroad, however due to scheduling it generally needs to happen in MSII year, which can limit some locations that require that students be juniors or seniors.

You also need to talk to your academic advisor to see if A) you will be able to take the necessary major classes to keep on track to graduate and B) whether all the classes you take will transfer as some colleges are picky about accepting credits completed anywhere except at the host institution. By the time you would able to do this you would be getting into your core major requirements and, depending on your major, you may not be able to take those oversees. Major specific engineering courses for example can be sparse for oversees components. Can't tell you much about the AROTC side of things, it'll be best to speak to them about this as soon as possible so they can help set you up for it if possible, just want to point out that ROTC isn't the only place you need to talk to about this.

Talk to your Battalion, we have a cadet studying in Washington DC this year (an MS III). Had Cadets spend a semester in New Zeland, London, and Kenya in the recent past.

Is there anything like CULP available for NROTC or AFROTC?

Not that I'm aware of for NROTC. This is primarily because there is already a scheduled, required, traianing cruise each summer for NROTC midshipmen. Since, aside from LDAC, Army has no required summer training, they have these additional opportunities for select cadets.

It's also my understanding that AFROTC does not have summer training opportunities aside from SFT your rising junior year. In the Air Force summer training opportunities are reserved for USAFA cadets (at least according to posts I've read on this forum).

Since this is a thread about study abroad I would point out that NROTC allows midshipmen to do a semester abroad. One of the midshipmen in my son's battalion will be spending the fall semester in the UK.

No, not like CULP, there used to be something simmilar for AF but...you know.

HOWEVER, all services are able to travel through project GO (covers room & board, tuition, fees, and part of your plane ticket) which can be applied to many different study abroad programs like LBAT. There is also a pilot ROTC Flagship program that is currently only available at 3 institutions. I'm at one that only offers money to study Chinese, but I believe there is one in Arizona for Arabic. This is also open to all ROTC branches, but it is a much smaller program.

Project GO website: http://www.rotcprojectgo.org/

I know an AF cadet who's Studied abroad twice so far I think, once to China and once to Japan, at least one of those times was through Project GO. This is their 5th year and since they have already completed all their ROTC classes, they are spending fall semester in China.
