Hello, I am applying for the class of 2018. Lets say I finish my application and everything tommorow; what's the soonest I could find out of my status? Would it be after November 1st because of the early action program?

You would have to wait until the MOC submits their entire slate. They cannot give any slot away until the slates are submitted, we found out the nomination first week in December. Most appointments are given out in March, some earlier and some recruited athletes are notified earlier, but don't count on it. It is a long wait, but well worth it! Make sure you have a plan B just in case.

What are slates? Does this mean that I have to have the interview with my congressmen before I can get an appointment or LOA? Because what if the congressmen decline me, but I then later get an LOA in the mail?

You must get a nomination, typically from a congressman or senator, but other nomination sources are available. Even if you get an LOA prior to getting a nomination, you must still also get a nomination. No nomination, no appointment. Period.

If you don't get a nomination then there is no way you can get an appointment.

USAFA will do NOTHING, or virtually nothing, per their message to ALO's, prior to 1 NOV...and that's the "early action" deadline, isn't it?

And as others have posted, without a nomination you can't be appointed. Yes, you can receive an LOA without a nomination but that letter will state that you must receive a nomination or it goes away. And LOA's are NOT common with USAFA. They do give them out...but not in large numbers.

After working with/for USAFA as an ALO for 19 years what I've learned is this:

Candidates completely overstress themselves with the "how long until I hear something..." (You'll hear when you hear, sadly)

And USAFA is the LAST ACADEMY to make selections. (we lose some amazing young men and women to the other SA's because of this)

It's a LONG process you are in for; accept that, do your very best ALL YEAR, and it will be what it is.

I realize this is not the answer you wanted...but it is reality.
