Today my two dogs got into it and I tried to break it up. In the process, I was bit on the top of the hand and received a puncture wound. I went to the emergency care center and the doctor did not want to give me stitches because it increases the rate of infection, so I received steri strips across the wound and he said lay off exercises involving the hand for a week and I should be fine. I assume DoDMERB wants to hear about everything so how do I report this to DoDMERB?

Hand injuries are VERY dangerous. You need to be extremely aware that the doctor may have understated the risk, or you may have misunderstood it. An ER doc will tell you that hand injuries, ESPECIALLY DOG BITES can lead to really, really gruesome infections that require surgery and can impact the long term health of your hand.

Keep it clean, receive follow-up care. If nothing more comes of it, DoDMERB need not be specifically notified. As it stands now, it's just a cut. If it progresses, you may have an issue.

Thats not good news. Thanks, I'm on antibiotics already its bandaged up and will lay off of everything for a while. He mentioned 60% lead to infections so ill do my best to be the 40.

At least it wasn't a cat!

Several years ago, my senior cat tried to close her mouth when I was attempting to poke a pill down her throat and a back tooth punctured my finger. By noon, my finger looked like a giant sausage and I was in the urgent care walk-in getting an antibiotic and a tetanus shot.

And how did you turn out??? Full mobility and all? Other than keeping it dry, tips on preventing infection from your experience?

Keep it very clean incase of infection which seems to be a high risk at the moment. I would
change the bandages more than once a day depending on how it looks feels etc. Hope you recover from it well pray for no infections! Keep an eye on it though incase of any signs of puss coming out of the wound.

I know the rule don't take advice from SAF for medical advice because of the anonymous functions of the forums :) , but I truly appreciate the support and input grace!

That's ironic, the exact same thing happened to be back in June, except I was bit on my forearm, and there were 3 puncture marks. The doc just told me to let it air out and not put a bandage on too tight; I also got antibiotics. It hurt pretty bad for a couple of days and then got better quickly. Best of luck warding of infection! :thumb:

I do not think every physical problem you have had in your life needs to be reported. My son played football and wrestling all 4 years of HS. In these sports you are constantly getting minor injuries. In my view, unless these injuries were serious and required extensive medical treatment or hospitalization, I do not think they need to be reported.
Of course, concussions, broken bones, badly injured knees etc should be reported.

So much for man's best friend! LOL thanks Melitzank. And BigNick: that makes sense, I will report it only if I require further treatment, thanks!
