GPA Changed on AROTC Portal

I don't know if anyone can give me insight as to what's going on or not, but the CGPA(UW) DS originally keyed in to the application portal has changed downward by a 10th. I figure it could be one of three things:

1. CC rounds down, instead of up. DS rounded up to the nearest 10th when he keyed in his GPA, as it was x.x5. If it had been x.x4, he would have rounded down.

2. CC re-calculated his GPA based only on core classes (e.g. did not include electives). I thought I remember reading something on here in the past about only core classes being included in the calculation.

3. His college transcripts (dual enrollment) that were scanned in are still showing as Pending. Perhaps that has thrown off the GPA that is currently showing.

Any thoughts? I just hate to have him bother CC with an email if it's something he doesn't have control over. If it's an error, then I would want him to contact them about it.

Let me see if I understand what your sone entered, for example:

His GPA was 3.55
He rounded up to 3.6
CC lists his GPA as 3.5

If this is the case then you were correct, CC rounds down.

My son had listed his GPA as 3.66, CC listed it as 3.6, I believe they just drop the last number.
 
GPA isn't something that you can ever round up, its not specific to CC. If the college or scholarship only wants the GPA to one decimal point they will just drop the last number, no rounding involved. Ex: a 3.95 isn't a 4.0, it's a 3.9.

OK, that's good to know since DS is getting ready to fill out his college applications, too. Thanks for the info.!
 
From our DS's experience as an AFROTC cadet it is taken out a bit further. For example it was 3.55, they will take it to 3.55X. 3.551 would be rounded down to 3.5. 3.559 would be a 3.6.

They take it out that far for many colleges. Our DS was an AFROTC scholarship recipient and merit at his college. He had to carry a 3.2 to maintain his merit scholarship.

He got a 3.194, one semester. The school placed him on probation because according to his school he did not have 3.2 for that semester. His overall cgpa was 3.43.

Yeesh! Thanks for the heads-up about the college aid. DS is applying to a couple of schools known for giving out respectable amounts of merit aid, so we'll have to make sure he's aware of his requirements in order to maintain the aid.
 
Glad to help. It was a huge shocker for us when they notified him, that he would be on academic probation for the next semester. We just assumed a 3.19 would round up to a 3.2. WRONG!

It was more of a shocker because the semester prior he was on the Dean's List with a 3.6+, and thought they would use his overall cgpa, which was in the 3.4 range. Never did we think it was not cgpa, but each semester.

In the end, it was for the best because for his OML, cgpa matters regarding AFSC selection. He made sure he was always above 3.3 at least for each and every remaining semesters.

Everything IMPO for scholarships comes down to the fine print. As I always post....the Devil is in the details. When you sign on that dotted line, you agree to the details....read the details, don't just sign your name.
